Village Board
The next work session will be held on Monday, Aug. 3 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room.
Music and meal
The next lunchtime concert at the Hendrickson Park gazebo will be held on Friday, July 24 at noon. Bring a brown bag lunch.
Water movements
The next adult pool dance will be held on Saturday, July 25 from 7 to 11 p.m.
Just for kicks
A beginners martial arts program for boys and girls begins on July 25. There will be six Saturday sessions. Children ages 5-7 meet from 3:15 to 4 p.m. and ages 8-12 from 4:15 to 5 p.m. at the Hendrickson Park administration building. The cost is $40.
Community Band
The Valley Stream Community Band will hold its next performance on Tuesday, July 28 at 8 p.m. at the John Smith Band Shell. The theme will be music through the generations.
Summer concert series
Moonlight Bay will perform at the John Smith Band Shell on Wednesday, July 29 at 8 p.m. The rain date is Aug. 3.
District symphony orchestra
The Central High School District's symphony orchestra's final two performances will be held on Thursdays, July 23 and 30 at 8 p.m. at the John Smith Band Shell.
Learn to swim
Children's swimming lessons will be offered on Mondays and Wednesdays, July 27-Aug. 19, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 28-Aug. 20. Each session contains eight lessons and are available to children age 18 months to 12 years. The cost is $40.
Boating Safety
The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary will hold a New York State certified boating safety course on Sunday, July 26 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Firemen's Field Clubhouse. Town
Be prepared
A hurricane safety seminar will be held on Monday, July 27 at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall court room. The program, sponsored by the Town of Hempstead, will help residents learn how to prepare for a major storm.
Town board
The Hempstead town council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 9:30 a.m. It will take place at the John Cranford Adams Playhouse on the South Campus of Hofstra University, Hempstead Turnpike in Hempstead.

Young adult programs
A teen video games night will take place on Friday, July 24. There will be Guitar Hero, Dance Dance Revolution and more. A writing night will be held on Friday, July 31. A guest author will work with teens on creative writing projects. Programs are for students in grades 6-12 and begin at 6:30 p.m.
The Book Review
Children in grades 3-4 are invited to discuss "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane" by Kate DiCamillo on Wednesday, July 29 at 4 p.m. Stop by the library to pick up a copy to read.
The Review Crew
Children in grades 5-6 will read and discuss "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler" by E.L. Konigsburg on Thursday, July 30 at 4 p.m. Stop by the library to pick up a copy.
Children's Room

Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books to the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.

Voice of Grandparents

Poetry Writing
The next workshop with Dr. Linda Opyr will be held on Thursday, July 30 from 4:30 to 6 p.m.
Iron Chef
A cooking workshop for teens will be held on Thursday, July 30 at 6:30 p.m. Come for an evening of competitive cooking and delicious fun.

Historical Society

Mind, Body and Spirit
Holy Trinity Episcopal Church's health and safety fair will be held on Saturday, July 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Village Green. There will be free screenings and child safety info.
Cancer Support Group
The group next meets on Monday, Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. in Franklin Hospital's Greenberg Conference Room. It is open to all cancer survivors and family members. Look Good, Feel Better
This free program, to teach women how to deal with the appearance-related side effects of cancer, will be held on Monday, Aug. 3 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Franklin Hospital's Shankman Auditorium. Blood Drive
The New York Blood Center will be holding a blood drive at the Elmont Library on Monday, Aug. 3 from 11 a.m to 4:30 p.m. One donation can save up to three lives. Look for the Blood Center's bus in the library parking lot.

School supply collection
Bethlehem Assembly of God Church is looking to give away 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students at its Aug. 16 block party. Braille Workshops
The Valley Stream Jewish Center is seeking volunteers to do computer typing for Helen Keller Services. Books are transcribed into large print for visually impaired children. Volunteers are needed one morning a week for two hours. Call (516) 561-2308.
