Village Board
The board of trustees will hold its next work session on Monday, July 6 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, July 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the court room.
Pool hours
The Valley Stream Pool will be open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day beginning Saturday, June 27.
Learn to be a lifeguard
The Valley Stream Pool will be offering a lifeguard training course for pool members 16 and older. The pre-test, to evaluate one's swimming ability, will be on July 2, 3, and 6 at 9 a.m. The cost of the course is $200.
Child swimming lessons
Swimming lessons will be held at the pool for children 18 months through 12 years old. A Monday/ Wednesday session begins on June 29, and a Tuesday/Thursday session starts June 30. Each session contains eight lessons and costs $40. For more information call (516) 825-8570.
Summer concert series
Gary Reynolds will be the first featured performer for the free Wednesday night concert series at the John Smith Bandshell. He will perform on July 1 at 8 p.m. The rain date is Monday, July 13.
Be healthy and strong
The summer exercise program with Marilyn Bunger begins on June 29 for 10 Monday night sessions. Classes are held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Firemen's Field clubhouse. The cost is $45. Register at the Hendrickson Park administration building. For more information call Marilyn at (516) 825-1548.

Town board
The Hempstead town council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, July 7 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
Salute to Veterans
The Town of Hempstead will host a Salute to Veterans concert and fireworks display on Saturday, June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at the town park in Point Lookout. The rain date is June 28.
Don't be left unprepared
Legislator Jeff Toback will host a hurricane preparedness seminar on Monday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Experts will discuss evacuation routes and procedures, emergency shelters, care of pets and other related topics.

Summer Reading Clubs
Registration for this year's summer reading programs has begun. The theme is "Be Creative @ Your Library." Budding Artists is for children age birth through pre-K; Music Makers for students in grades K-2 and Rising Stars for children in grades 3-6. There is also a reading program for young adults.
Bookmark contest
Winners of the annual summer bookmark contest will be honored at an awards ceremony on Monday, June 29 at 4 p.m.
Book Club
The group next meets on Tuesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. This month's selection is "Prodigal Summer," by Barbara Kingsolver.
Holiday closing
The library will be closed on Saturday, July 4 in observance of Independence Day. It will re-open on Monday, July 6 at 10 a.m.
Children's Room
The children's room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for June with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books to the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.

Puppet performance
The kick-off celebration for the children's summer reading club will be held on Tuesday, June 30 at 2 p.m. Come to the theater for a performance by Petra Puppets with their Big Mouth Talent Show combining ventriloquism, comedy, illusion, music, audience participation and a cast of outrageous puppet characters. No registration is required.
Teen summer programs
Registration for all teen summer programs is under way. Students entering grades 7-12 in September are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Club. Register in person at the young adult services desk.
