Village Board
The board of trustees will hold its next regular business meeting on Monday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Public hearings
The village board of trustees will hold a pair of public hearings on Monday, May 18 at 7:30 p.m. The first is on the proposed increase of various parking fines. The second is on contracting with the Valley Stream Fire Department for fire protection services. All interested parties will have the opportunity to speak.
Summer sports camps
The final registration date for summer sports skills camps is Saturday, May 30 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Hendrickson Park administration building. The camps are lacrosse, flag football, soccer and baseball/softball, and are open to children entering grades 4-8. The cost is $85 for village residents and $90 for high school district residents. Town board
The Hempstead town council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, May 19 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
County Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature has scheduled its next meeting for Monday, May 18 at 10 a.m. in the legislative chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.
Events
Win some prizes
The Carbonaro School sixth grade will be sponsoring a Chinese auction on Friday, May 15 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Prizes include a 32-inch flat screen TV, a portable DVD player, and tickets to Regis and Kelly, The View and Rachael Ray. There will also be carnival games, raffle baskets, a live band and food. Admission is free.
Pet party
Central Veterinary Associates of Valley Stream will sponsor a microchip clinic for National Pet Week on Sunday, May 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Alley Pond Park on Springfield Boulevard in Queens. There will be raffle prizes, rides, games, arts and crafts, demonstrations and pet adoptions. A $25 donation is requested. For more information call (516) 825-3066.
Game Day
The Valley Stream Jewish Center will host a game day on Wednesday, May 20 at noon. Bring your mah-jong, canasta or bridge groups. For others, word games and a rummy cube will be provided. Central memorial service
The Valley Stream Central High School Alumni Scholarship Foundation will hold a memorial service on Saturday, May 23 at 11 to honors students who served and sacrificed their lives in war. It will be held at the Central High School War Memorial located outside the school's main entrance.
Memorial Day parade
The 89th annual Memorial Day parade will be held on Monday, May 25. It begins at 9:30 a.m. at the Wheeler Avenue School. The parade travels down Rockaway Parkway, then Valley Stream Boulevard, ending at the Village Green. A memorial service follows at the veterans monument. This year's grand marshall is American Legion Post 854 Vice Commander John Faust.
Defensive Driving
Registration is under way for an AARP driving course offered by the Valley Stream Jewish Center. It will be held on Thursday, June 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 322 N. Corona Ave. The cost is $12 for members and $14 for non-members. Space is limited so reserve a spot by calling (516) 561-2308.

Library board
The Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public; ring bell at children's room entrance for admittance.
Memorial weekend closing
The library will be closed from Saturday, May 23 through Monday, May 25 for the Memorial Day weekend. Be sure to check out your materials by 9 p.m. on Friday, May 22. The library will reopen on Tuesday, May 26 at 10 a.m.
Get your game on
A young adult video games night will be held on Friday, May 29 at 6:30 p.m. Teens in grades 6-12 will play Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero and more. There will be treats and prizes.
Children's Room
The children's room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for May with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. Programs include Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs, and other seasonal events. Check the calendar in the library or online at www.nassaulibrary.org/valleyst/

Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books to the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.

Book discussion
This month's reading selection is "Infidel" by Ayaan Hirsi Ali. A discussion will be held on Monday, May 18 at 2 p.m. with librarian Laurie O'Toole.
Knitting club
The Friday knitting club for teens will next meet on Friday, May 17 from 4 to 5 p.m.
Computer Fourth Grade
A computer workshop for adults will be held on Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m. It will provide an understanding of the Windows file management structure. Adults must have already completed Computer Kindergarten, Second and Third Grades.
Family Movie Day
"Bolt" will be shown on Saturday, May 16 at 2 p.m. The movie is rated PG. Adults must accompany children.
Pre-School Hour
"Quack, Quack, Quack" will be the theme on Monday, May 18 at 10:15 and 11:30 a.m. for children 18 months through pre-school. Enjoy a Tots Night Out at 7 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce

Lions Club
The Valley Stream Lions Club will once again be offering scholarships to deserving graduating seniors who reside in the village. The scholarship committee will select the recipients on the basis of financial need, comparative academic standing, overall school, and community activities. Ask the Nutritionist
Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, May 13 at 11 a.m. She will discuss the health benefits of soy foods and will include a food tasting. A question and answer period will follow.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program
