Board of Trustees
The village board will hold its next work session on Monday, March 2 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, March 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Movies at Village Hall
"College Road Trip" will be shown on Friday, Feb. 27 and "Horton Hears a Who" on Friday, March 13. Both movies begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room. Free tickets will be available at the Hendrickson Park administration building one week before the showing.
Town & County
Town board
The Hempstead town council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
County Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature will hold its next meeting on Monday, March 9 at 10 a.m. in the legislative chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.

Musical Diversity in America
"Singing the Stories of the West" with Ernie Sites will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. This program is for children ages 5 and up with a parent or caregiver. Through traditional and contemporary Western music, Cowboy Ernie will educate the audience about historical facts, western customs, and cowboy culture in a lighthearted program. Kids will participate in sing-a-longs, and storytelling as they learn an accurate history of the west. Tickets are required for the performance and are available in the children's room.
Young adult nights
A young adult games night will be held on Friday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m. This is a change from the original date. Teens will play board games, participate in a scavenger hunt and receive prizes. The program is open to students in grades 6-12.
Computer classes
Three computer classes will be offered on Saturday, March 7. Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m., Microsoft Word Basics from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and Microsoft Excel Basics from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required for the program.
Teen Tech Week
Teen volunteers will demonstrate how to use various technology at a Teen Tech Showcase on Saturday, March 14 from 1 to 3 p.m. Demonstrations will include how to use an iPod, play Nintendo Wii and download photos from a digital camera. Volunteer experts, from grades 6-12, are still needed and can receive community service credit. For more information, contact young adult librarian Faith Kenney or Director Mamie Eng.
Book Club
The group will next meet on Tuesday, March 31 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. The book to be discussed is "Ironweed" by William Kennedy.
AARP Senior Tax Aide
Tax help will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Tuesday through April 14. Be sure to bring your W-2 form, all relevant bank and financial statements, 2008 tax forms and a copy of your 2007 tax return.
Children's Room
There are a wide variety of programs scheduled for March 2009 with Children's Librarian Jaclyn Kunz including Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Registration is required for all programs with first preference given to Valley Stream library cardholders.
Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books to the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.

Library board meeting
The library Board of Trustees will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 8 p.m. The public is invited to attend.
Voice of Grandparents
The support group will next meet on Friday, Feb. 27 at 9:30 a.m. The discussion is led by social worker Sari Flesch. Share experiences with other grandparents and recognize when and how to intervene.
Senior Step and Style Dancing
The next class will be held on Friday, Feb. 27 at 10 a.m. The class is led by instructor Millie Danko.
Family workshop
A parent-child workshop for families will be held on Fridays, Feb. 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27 and April 1 at 11:30 a.m.
History of Jazz
Shenole Latimer will present "Our Music, Our Culture" on Friday, Feb. 27 at 12:30 p.m. Learn about the history of jazz from the early 1900s to today. An emphasis will be placed on visiting the African-American roots of jazz and the cultural and sociological impact that jazz had in the U.S.
Chair Yoga
The next class with Mary Mazzone will be held on Monday, March 2 at 1 p.m.
Tuesday feature film
"The Other Boleyn Girl" will be shown on March 3 at 2 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13.
Teen wrap
Learn how to prepare simple, delicious and healthy wraps with Chef Frank Miale. Create five basic lunch wraps and enjoy an evening of snacking with recipes to take home on Tuesday, March 3 at 6 p.m. This program is for students in grades 7-12.
Tax help for seniors
Free tax help will be offered by the Town of Hempstead every Monday from noon to 3 p.m. A tax preparation program offered by Hofstra University will be held every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Bridge With Mimi
Intermediate level classes are held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. This is not a beginner's class - you must have experience in playing the game.
Teen Advisory Group
The next meeting will be held on Saturday, March 7 at 2 p.m. Help select workshops, books, music and other materials the library offers for teens.
Schools
District 24
The next worksession will be held on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the William L. Buck School. The regular business meeting follows at 8:30.
Central High School District
The Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Tuesday, March 3 and its next regular business meeting on Tuesday, March 10. Both meetings begin at 8 p.m. and are at Memorial Junior High School.
Blessed Sacrament School

Cancer Support Group
The group will next meet on Monday, March 2 at 2 p.m. in Franklin Hospital's Greenberg conference room. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members, and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Ask the Nutritionist
Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, March 11 at 11 a.m. The topic will be "Let Them Eat Beans," focusing on the health benefits of beans and legumes. Recipes will be shared, and tips for easier digestion will be given. A question and answer session will follow.

Overeaters Anonymous can help with its no dues, no fees and no weigh-ins program. AHRC Auxiliary brunch
The North Woodmere- Valley Stream Auxiliary of AHRC Nassau will host a St. Patrick's Day brunch on Sunday, March 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Cannon's BlackThorn, 49 N. Village Ave. in Rockville Centre. There is a donation of $30 per adult and $20 per child which will benefit children and adults with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities. AARP Chapter 2686

Historical Society
Judge Robert Bogle will give a historical perspective of the New York State village justice system on Thursday, March 19 at 8 p.m. The lecture is sponsored by the Valley Stream Historical Society and will be held at the Holy Trinity Parish Hall, Brooklyn Avenue and Seventh Street. Valley Stream PAL

American Legion
Andrew Fatscher Post 854 will hold a St. Patrick's dance on Saturday, March 21 from 7 to 11 p.m. There will be a corned beef and cabbage dinner, free wine and beer and a cash bar. Study Luke and Genesis
Holy Name of Mary Church will host an adult bible study next month. On Wednesday, March 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the cafeteria, there will be a study of the Gospel according to Luke with Deacon Clyde.
