Village Board of Trustees
The next work session will be held on Monday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Arts and Crafts
The Valley Stream Recreation Department will be holding a winter arts and crafts program for children ages 5-10, and a woodworking program for children ages 7-12. Movies at Village Hall
There will be four Friday night movie features in the Village Hall Court Room. "Space Chimps" will be shown on Jan. 23; "Wall-E" on Feb. 13; "College Road Trip" on Feb. 27 and "Horton Hears a Who" on March 13. The town board will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
Challenge your assessment
County Legislator Jeff Toback will host a meeting with the Department of Assessment to help residents learn how to challenge their assessment. It will be held at the Forest Road School in South Valley Stream on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

Young adult nights
The library will hold a Winter Wonderland Fun Night on Friday, Jan. 16. Teens will make a winter craft, play charades and participate in a scavenger hunt. On Friday, Jan. 30, the library will hold a video games night featuring Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution. Other games will be available too. Both programs are open to students in grades 6-12 and will begin at 6:30 p.m.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day
The library will be closed on Monday, Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Day. The library will re-open on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 10 a.m.
Valley Stream Book Club
"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini will be discussed at the book club's next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the children's room.
Computer classes
The library will hold three computer classes on Saturday, Feb. 7. Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and a class on Microsoft Excel Basics will be from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.
Lego Exhibit
Lego creations by local children of all ages will be on display at the library throughout January in this 12th annual event.
Children's Room

Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.
Live homework help
Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, have access to experts waiting to help through the library's Web site. Pay less taxes
Barry Lisak, an IRS enrolled agent, will present a seminar revealing 147 tax-saving strategies to help reduce one's federal and state taxes. All new tax laws will be highlighted! A free booklet will be distributed to all attendees. The program will be held on Friday, Jan. 16 at 12:30 p.m.
Family Movie
"Prince Caspian" will be shown on Saturday, Jan. 17 at noon. The movie is rated PG and all children must be accompanied by an adult.
Child safety program
Get your child's photo and fingerprints taken and receive a laminated card with this information on Saturday, Jan. 17 from noon to 3 p.m.
Computer Kindergarten
A program for adult first-time computer users will be held on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. This is a slow-paced, user friendly workshop covering topics such as turning the computer on, the desktop, using the mouse, opening and closing programs and turning the computer off.
MLK Tribute
Janie Stockhamer and Kerma Gerz will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the Civil Rights movement through song and poetry on Sunday, Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.

Chamber of Commerce
