Town & County

Town of Hempstead
The town board will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.

Challenge your assessment
County Legislator Jeff Toback will host a meeting with the Department of Assessment to help residents learn how to challenge their assessment. It will be held at the Forest Road School in South Valley Stream on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.

Nassau County Legislature
The next legislature meeting will be held on Monday, Jan. 12 at the Theodore Roosevelt Executive and Legislative Building, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.

Library board
The Henry Waldinger Memorial Library Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7:30 p.m.Ê The meeting is open to the public; ring bell at children-s room entrance for admittance.

Young adult nights
The library will hold a Winter Wonderland Fun Night on Friday, Jan. 16. Teens will make a winter craft, play charades and participate in a scavenger hunt. On Friday, Jan. 30, the library will hold a video games night featuring Guitar Hero and Dance Dance Revolution. Other games will be available too. Both programs are open to students in grades 6-12 and will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Valley Stream Book Club
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini will be discussed at the book club-s next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the
children-s room.

Lego Exhibit
Lego creations by local children of all ages will be on display at the library throughout January in this 12th annual event.

Children-s Room

Homebound delivery service
Volunteers deliver books the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.

Live homework help
Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, have access to experts waiting to help through the library-s Web site. Poetry Writing workshop
The next session will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. with published poet Dr. Linda Opyr.

Notetaking skills
Workshop for teens will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Improve your notetaking skills by learning how to take notes from a lecture or a textbook.

Senior Step and Style Dancing
The next class will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at 10 a.m. led by Isabel Batson and Millie Danko.

Medicaid fraud lecture
Andrew Weiss of the Nassau District Attorney-s office and Joseph Napolitano of the U.S. Health and Human Services Inspector General-s office will discuss issues relating to Medicaid and Medicare fraud. The lecture will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 at
12:30 p.m.

Teen Advisory Group
The next meeting will be held on Friday, Jan. 9 from 5 to 6 p.m. Help select books, music and other materials for the young adult department.

Yoga and the Imagination
A program for children in grades K-3 will be held on Saturday, Jan. 10 at 10:30 a.m. Listen to stories and bring characters to life through basic beginner yoga poses.

Babies in Motion
Movement program for babies ages 6 months to 2 years will be held on Monday, Jan. 12 at 10:15 a.m. with a participating adult.

Winter craft
A craft program for children in grades 4-6 will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 4 p.m. and for children in grades K-3 on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 4 p.m.

Tuesday Feature Film
A Good Year will be shown on Jan. 13 at 2 p.m. It is rated PG-13.

Caregivers Support Group
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m. This open discussion is led by social worker Sari Flesch.

Financial planning
Ida Epstein will give advice on financial planning on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. Learn how to avoid the most common mistakes so that you can maintain your present lifestyle in retirement.

Bridge With Mimi
Intermediate level classes are held every Tuesday at 10 a.m. This is not a beginner-s class you must have experience in playing the game.


Schools

Central High School District
The next Board of Education business meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 8 p.m. at Memorial Junior High School.

District 13
The Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. in the district board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 8 p.m. at the Willow Road School.

District 24
The Board of Education will hold its next work session on Thursday, Jan. 8 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a work session on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the regular business meeting at 8:30. All meetings are held at the William L. Buck School on Horton Avenue.

District 30
The next Board of Education work session will be held on Monday, Jan. 12 and the next regular business meeting is on Monday, Jan. 26.
Both meetings begin at 8 p.m. and will be held in the Shaw Avenue School library.


Health

Blood Drive
Franklin Hospital and Long Island Blood Services will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the hospital-s Shankman Auditorium. Individuals age 16 (with parental consent) to 75, weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health are eligible to donate. Donors will receive a free mini-exam. Stroke Awareness
Ceil Sorrentino from Franklin Hospital will give a presentation on stroke awareness at the Elmont Library. It will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. She also be providing free blood pressure screenings.

Ask the Nutritionist
Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. Come and take part in a discussion about foods and supplements that are in the news.

Health Assessments
Registered Nurse June Friedel will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring. She also will be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling. The program will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m.

Mental Illness Seminar
Apartments with Individualized Programs for People with Mental Illness will be the topic of a program at the Peninsula Counseling Center on Wednesday, Jan. 14. A group coping session session led by Helen Murello begins at 6:30 p.m. Anu Arnold, a clinical psychologist and deputy director of Family Residents and Enterprise, speaks at 7 p.m. PCC is located at 50 W. Asthma program
A program on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hosted by Franklin Hospital-s Respiratory Therapy staff, is held every Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room R37 of the hospital-s radiology department. It is an open forum so participants can come anytime during the program. The discussion will review prevention, care and treatment of asthma and COPD, covering all ages. Chamber of Commerce
The Valley Stream Chamber of Commerce will hold its next networking meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at noon at Villa Marcello, 47 Franklin Ave. (between Cornwell and Emerson). Historical Society hosting lecture
Retired FBI agent and author Tom McShane will speak at the Holy Trinity parish hall on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. The lecture is being hosted by the Valley Stream Historical Society. Valley Stream Civilian Patrol

Learn local history
