Young Adult Book Discussion
Teens will discuss Stephanie Meyer's "Twilight" on on Friday, Jan. 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This program is open to students in grades 6-12. Refreshments will be served.
Computer Classes
On Saturday, Jan. 3, the library is offering three computer classes. The first class on Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. followed by Microsoft Excel basics from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Valley Stream Book Club
"A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini will be discussed at the book club's next meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 27 at 7 p.m. in the
children's room.
Children's Lego Exhibit
Lego creations by local children of all ages will be on display at the library throughout January in this 12th annual event.

Homebound Delivery Service
Volunteers deliver books the homes of those with a disability or who are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. This service is offered weekly, bi-weekly, monthly or as needed. All you need to do is complete a short application form at the adult reference desk.
Live Homework Help
Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, have access to experts waiting to help through the library's Web site. Cancer Support
The group will next meet on Monday, Jan 5 at 2 p.m. in Franklin Hospital's Shankman Auditorium. It is open to all cancer survivors and family members. Blood Drive
Franklin Hospital and Long Island Blood Services will hold a blood drive on Tuesday, Jan. 13 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the hospital's Shankman Auditorium. Individuals age 16 (with parental consent) to 75, weighing at least 110 pounds and in general good health are eligible to donate. Donors will receive a free mini-exam. Ask the Nutritionist
Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. Come and take part in a discussion about foods and supplements that are in the news.
Health Assessments
Registered Nurse June Friedel will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring. She also will be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling. The program will be held on Thursday, Jan. 15 at 10 a.m.
Mental Illness Seminar
"Apartments with Individualized Programs for People with Mental Illness" will be topic of a program at the Peninsula Counseling Center on Wednesday, Jan. 14. A group coping session session led by Helen Murello begins at 6:30 p.m. Anu Arnold, a clinical psychologist and deputy director of Family Residents and Enterprise speaks at 7 p.m. PCC is located at 50 W. Community Education Program
A program on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, hosted by Franklin Hospital's Respiratory Therapy staff, is held every Tuesday from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Room R37 of the hospital's radiology department. It is an open forum so participants can come anytime during the program. The discussion will review prevention, care and treatment of asthma and COPD, covering all ages. Historical Society hosting lecture
Retired FBI agent and author Tom McShane will speak at the Holy Trinity parish hall on Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 8 p.m. The lecture is being hosted by the Valley Stream Historical Society. Christmas Prescepio
Blessed Sacrament Church will keep its Christmas Prescepio open through Sunday, Jan. 11. Rev. Gerald Cestare invites community members to come view this traditional Neapolitan Nativity. The display is located in the church and includes thousands of figures, buildings and miniatures. It is open for viewing Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on weekends from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. The church is located at 201 N. Central Ave.
Temple Gates of Zion
