The rain didn’t stop Valley Streamers from coming out in full force this Memorial Day.
“Everything was quite good,” Mayor Ed Fare said. “Men and women fought and died for this country under terrible conditions — we certainly can march in a little rain.”
Fare described the mood of the crowd as “enthusiastic,” and said that people were “very respectful of the true meaning of Memorial Day.”
Attendees got an unexpected visit from Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who stopped in Valley Stream for a glimpse of the local tradition.
Deputy Mayor Vincent Grasso wanted to dispel cancellation fears because of inclement weather in future years.
“In the past two years there has been some confusion about the parade due to the weather,” he said. “Let’s be clear that when it comes to honoring those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, the mayor and village board will always march.”
