The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced the completion of a renovation project at the Valley Stream Long Island Rail Road station on Dec. 19.

“The LIRR and MTA listened to concerns from the Valley Stream community and delivered on promises by delivering a beautiful new train station,” Assembly Member Michaelle Solages said. “I want to thank the MTA and their labor partners for giving us a station that is worthy of the people who use it every day.”

The Valley Stream renovation is part of a larger group of projects that add seven stations to the list of accessible LIRR stations and replace elevators and escalators at two stations that were already accessible.

Accessibility-related work at the station included replacing an escalator, installing a new staircase and replacing an elevator. Crews also constructed a new elevator machine room and a new electrical room, completed service upgrades and installed elevator vestibules to provide weather protection.

Additional improvements included the installation of new security cameras and updated station signage. Crews performed extensive state-of-good-repair work, including painting steel columns and girders, repairing structural cracks and spalling, replacing tactile warning strips, platform markers, and rubbing edge boards and upgrading the station’s public address system.

“We are spending billions of dollars on station improvement projects, and it matters because every day people rely on us to get to school, work and everything else the region has to offer,” MTA Chief Accessibility Officer Quemuel Arroyo said. “State of good repair is synonymous with accessibility, and the MTA is committed to making the system work for all New Yorkers.”

The project also included the addition of new parking spaces, improved lighting, sidewalks and crosswalks. New closed-circuit television cameras were installed throughout the station area.

More than $12 million in federal funding was allocated to the project.

The Valley Stream station is one of the busiest on the LIRR. On weekdays, 63 westbound trains and 57 eastbound trains stop at the station. Weekend service includes 43 westbound trains and 44 eastbound trains. The average monthly ridership in 2025 is nearly 137,000 riders.
