Valley Stream man among 13 indicted for insurance fraud

An FDNY paramedic from Valley Stream was one of 13 indicted on Tuesday for insurance fraud, according to a State Attorney General news release.

Jose Solis, 34, who has been an FDNY paramedic since April 2008, allegedly signed up for disability insurance through AFLAC, and manipulated the system by forging physicians’ or supervisors’ signatures to file false insurance claims. He is charged with defrauding AFLAC of approximately $27,229, and was arraigned in Queens County Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Solis and 12 other city employees allegedly collectively stole more than $500,000. Each defendant stands accused of one count of grand larceny and one count of insurance fraud for stealing between $3,000 and $100,000.

“Public employees are entrusted to adhere to the highest code of conduct. Yet these defendants undermined the public trust in government and the integrity of our insurance system by perpetrating this alleged scheme,” said Eric Schneiderman, the state’s attorney general, in a news release. “Cracking down on public corruption is a top priority for my office, and we will continue our relentless work with our partners in law enforcement to root out fraud and waste wherever we find it.”

The State Department of Financial services referred the issue to Schneiderman’s office, according to the news release.

Oliver Storch, Solis’s attorney, said he pleaded not guilty in court.

“Paramedic Solis has an unblemished record as a FDNY first responder,” Storch said. “He is in the business of saving lives. He’s very saddened and upset about yesterday’s events … and he’s asked the public to withhold judgment until the charges are addressed in the appropriate forums.”
