Valley Stream continued its long-standing Hanukkah tradition on Sunday, hosting its annual menorah lighting ceremony at 4:30 p.m. After snowy weather earlier in the day, conditions cleared by the time the event began, allowing the ceremony to proceed as planned.
The annual lighting has become a meaningful fixture in the village’s holiday season, symbolizing perseverance, faith and the power of light during the darkest time of the year. Each year, the ceremony serves as a public expression of Jewish heritage while also reflecting Valley Stream’s broader spirit of inclusion and community pride.
“I am so pleased to participate in all the wonderful holiday festivities that took place around our beautiful village,” Village Trustee Sharon Daly said. “I want to express to everyone my heartfelt best wishes for joy throughout this most special season.”
Residents gathered outdoors as the menorah was lit, demonstrating a shared commitment to preserving community traditions even in challenging weather conditions. The ceremony offered a moment of reflection and togetherness, reinforcing the message of hope and resilience central to Hanukkah and its historical significance.
Village-sponsored observances such as the menorah lighting have long played a role in uniting residents of different backgrounds, and Sunday’s ceremony continued that tradition. With the snowfall having stopped, the atmosphere was calm and welcoming as the village came together for the annual observance.
The menorah lighting remains a cherished Valley Stream tradition, highlighting connection, continuity and the enduring symbolism of light during the holiday season.
