Valley Stream resident John D’Angelis, 53, has owned a medical sales business in the village for nearly a decade, and now it’s about to get bigger.
D’Angelis’s business, Innovative Medical Solutions, has formed a partnership with Biocell Center, a Massachusetts-based company that specializes in amniotic fluid stem cell preservation.
His company will work with hospitals and private OB/GYN clinics and offer their patients an option to preserve amniotic fluid stem cells collected during routine second trimester amniocentesis — a process where fetal tissue in amniotic fluid is extracted and tested for genetic abnormalities.
“With its highly successful track record in Europe, Biocell Center presents a great opportunity to collaborate and to bring cutting-edge technology to the U.S. and to the New York area,” D’Angelis said.
A 1975 graduate of Central High School, D’Angelis has called the village home since he was 13. He graduated from C.W. Post in 1979 with a degree in medical biology, and landed his first full-time job working in the pathology lab at Franklin Hospital.
After moving to Garden City to raise his family in 1996, D’Angelis moved back to Valley Stream in 2002. That same year, D’Angelis said he came to a crossroad in his life. He had been working in medical sales for 20 years, he said, and always had the dream of owning his own business. “After 9/11 and losing some friends, I reexamined my life,” he said. “I realized that I needed to get it going.”
D’Angelis said he knew that his opportunities as a salesman were limited unless he opened his own business. He worked for a biotech company for 20 years before the birth of Innovative Medical Solutions, he said, and mixed with his science acumen, D’Angelis knew that he could make his dream a reality. “Interacting with sales people from other companies, I just got intrigued with that part of the business,” he said. “I decided to use my science background and sort of segue into the sales part.”
Innovative Medical Solutions opened its doors for business in Valley Stream in 2002. Not only does D’Angelis’s company handle medical sales to hospitals and private practices, he also consults with different businesses in the healthcare industry and develops marketing campaigns that underscore how his customers can run their businesses more efficiently.
He said he wanted to open his business in Valley Stream for two reasons — its proximity to New York City and the airports, and more importantly, it’s where he and his wife, Joanne, call home.
D’Angelis said his partnership with Biocell is a win-win for his company because a large portion of his clientele are gynecologists. “I mostly deal with OB/GYN’s and their products are geared toward to that audience,” he said. “It’s a good fit for my customer base.”
