According to Fifth Precinct detectives, a school security guard, patrolling Shaw's grounds at 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 1, was the first to discover widespread damage at the school. The security guard alerted police.
The burglary is believed to have taken place sometime between Nov. 30 and the time the security guard happened onto the scene, police said.
An unknown person or persons gained access to the building, apparently by smashing classroom windows, according to police reports.
Following the long holiday weekend, district officials, who could not be reached for comment, students and teachers were greeted by the aftermath, which included computers, fish tanks and chairs strewn around the outside of the school, police reports said.
In addition, interior damage to an unknown number of classroom walls was discovered. Graffiti was written on the walls and fire extinguishers were sprayed. Also, sinks at the school were stopped up and faucets left running, which caused flood damage, police said.
Neither detectives nor the Nassau County Public Information Office would comment on possible suspects except to say that the investigation was ongoing.
