Verizon Wireless customers across the United States reported a widespread network outage Wednesday morning that left tens of thousands of phones stuck in “SOS” or “no service” mode, disrupting calls, text messages and mobile data.
Verizon said late Wednesday evening that the outage has been resolved.
"The outage has been resolved," Verizon said in a statement. "If customers are still having an issue, we envourage them to restart their devices to reconnect to the network. For those affected, we will provide account credits. Details will be shared directly with customers. We sincerely apologize for the disruption."
The carrier said an issue was affecting wireless voice and data service for some customers. Verizon did not disclose the cause of the disruption but said in social media updates that engineering teams were deployed and working to restore service as quickly as possible.
The outage began shortly after 9 a.m. eastern time and quickly escalated, according to Downdetector, a website that tracks user-reported service disruptions. At its peak, more than 113,000 outage reports were logged nationwide. Customers in major cities including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Washington, D.C., Houston, Atlanta, Miami and Dallas reported total signal loss and failed connections.
Verizon said affected customers may be able to place calls and send messages using Wi-Fi calling, if available.
