This year, the Bellmore Lions Club donated $1,000 to the veterans association to help fund five student scholarship awards.
"We're very grateful to the Bellmore Lions for their donation," said Frank Colon, the Nurses Ball chairman and North Bellmore American Legion Post No. 1749 commander. The Lions often make charitable contributions to local causes. Colon said Lions' President Joe Anderson helped with the nursing scholarships this year.
Five nursing students received $500 scholarships at the 41st annual Nurses' Training Ball, held in early February at the Andrew Fatscher Post No. 854 in Valley Stream. They included:
Ernest Viegelman Memorial Scholarship: SUNY Farmingdale student Theresa Kiely.
Roy Justice Memorial Scholarship: Adelphi University student Desiree Ortiz.
John DeFalco Memorial Scholarship: Molloy College student Jeanne Ost.
Charles Herbert Memorial Scholarship: Molloy College student Melissa Douglas.
James Frazer Memorial Scholarship: Sacred Heart University student Elizabeth Onarato..
The Nassau County 40 & 8 is also called La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux in French, representing the World War II railroad boxcars that carried either 40 men or eight mules to the war front. Founded in 1920, the organization is a invitation-only membership honor society of American Legion veterans.
