Barrett recreation program
The final registration dates for the summer recreation program at Barrett Park are Saturday, June 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Wednesday, June 10 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Hendrickson Park administration building. Summer camp runs from July 1 to Aug. 14.
Swimming season
The Valley Stream pools opens on Saturday, June 13 at 10 a.m. Stop by the Hendrickson Park administration building to buy your season pass.

Town board
The Hempstead town council will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, June 16 at 7 p.m. at the Nathan L. H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St., Hempstead.
Don't be left unprepared
Legislator Jeff Toback will host a hurricane preparedness seminar on Monday, June 29 at 7:30 p.m. at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Experts will discuss evacuation routes and procedures, emergency shelters, care of pets and other related topics.
County Legislature
The Nassau County Legislature has scheduled its next meeting for Monday, June 8 at 10 a.m. in the legislative chambers, 1550 Franklin Ave., Mineola.

Essay contest awards
Assemblyman Bob Barra and Mayor Ed Cahill will honor winning students from the "What Does the American Flag Mean to You?" essay and art contest on Sunday, June 14 at 11 a.m. at the Hendrickson Park gazebo. All veterans are invited as special guests. For more information call (516) 561-8216.
Fireworks tickets
The annual Fourth of July fireworks show will he held on Saturday, July 4, at Firemen's Field. The rain date is July 5. Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Village Hall, Collision Concepts, Hendrickson Park and pool or at the gate on the 4th. The cost is $6 per person or $5 if purchased by June 12.
Jump to this performance
David L. Fisher, a.k.a. "The Rope Warrior," will visit the Village Green bandshell on Saturday, June 13 at 10:30 a.m. This program is for students, grades 4-12. The Rope Warrior executes stunts that most people can't even imagine using a jump rope. Tickets are required and are available at the Henry Waldinger Library's adult reference desk. Last call for bookmarks
Entries for the library's summer reading bookmark contest are due by Friday, June 5. This year's theme is "Be Creative @ Your Library." The contest is open to children in pre-K through sixth grade and winners from each level will be honored at an awards ceremony on Monday, June 29.
Musical diversity
"Patriotic and American Folksongs" with Robin Greenstein will be presented as part of the More Musical Diversity in America series on Thursday, June 4 from 7 to 8 p.m. This program, for children ages 5 and up with parent or caregiver, is the finale of this year's musical series. Tickets are required and are available in the children's room.
Teen book chat
A young adult and parent book discussion will be held on Friday, June 5 at 6:30 p.m. The selection is "Luna" by Julie Ann Peters. Participants will be entered in a raffle to win a free copy of the book.
Computer classes
The library will hold three computer classes on Saturday, June 6. Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Microsoft Word Basics is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and a Microsoft Excel Basics class is offered from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.

The Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, June 17 at 7:30 p.m. Ring bell at children's room entrance for admittance.
Make dad a gift
A young adult Father's Day crafts night will be held on Friday, June 19 at 6:30 p.m.
Books just like new
A "Gently Used" book sale will be held at the library on Saturday, June 20 at 10 a.m. All books will be available for purchase at 90 percent off the list price. Stop by the library to get a coupon for an additional 10 percent off your total purchase.
Book Club
The group next meets on Tuesday, June 30 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. This month's selection is "Prodigal Summer," by Barbara Kingsolver.
Children's Room

A teen craft program will be held on Friday, June 5 at 4 p.m.
Go stuff it!
A craft program with Nancy Kraft will be held on Friday, June 5 @ 12:30 p.m. Participants will create decorative piece using simple quilting techniques to outline a design and then stuff it, creating a raised surface on the face of the fabric. All materials will be supplied.
Teen Advisory Group
The next meeting will be held on Saturday, June 6 at 2 p.m. Help select books, music, workshops and other materials for teens.

"Get Smart" will be show on Tuesday, June 9 at 2 p.m. The movie is rated PG-13.
Caregivers support
The group next meets on Tuesday, June 9 at 3 p.m. This open discussion is led by social worker Sari Flesch.
Be a poet
The next poetry writing workshop with Dr. Linda Opyr will be held on Thursdays, June 11 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to write poetry and share what they've written.
Teen summer programs
Registration for all teen summer programs begins on Monday, June 15. Students entering grades 7-12 in September are invited to participate in the Summer Reading Club. Register in-person at the young adult services desk.
Book Discussion
This month's reading selection is "Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie" by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows. It will be discussed on Monday, June 22 at 2 p.m. with librarian, Patricia Magee.

Historical Society

Ask the Nutritionist
Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak on the topic "Eat Your Beans" at the Elmont Library on Wednesday, June 10 at 11 a.m. Learn how to add these nutritional powerhouses to your diet. A question and answer session will follow.
Health Assessments
Nurse June Friedel will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring at the Elmont Library on Thursday, June 18 at 10 a.m. She will be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling.
Drug and Alcohol Abuse Program

The story of Helen Keller

Building fund concert
The Valley Stream Baptist Church will be hosting a building fund expansion fundraising concert on Saturday, July 11 from 7 to 9 pm. Donations are welcome. The church is located at 1865 N. Central Ave.
