Village Board of Trustees will hold its next regular business meeting on Monday, Nov. 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.

Valley Stream Taxi will be offering free rides to village seniors who are registered to get flu shots on Thursday, Dec. 4 at the
Hendrickson Park administration building between 9 a.m. and noon. Flu shot will also be given on Wednesday, Nov. 24 at the Green Acres Senior Center, 400 Flower Road, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more information or to schedule a ride, call Valley Stream Taxi at (516) 825-6900.


Events

Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Valley Stream Lions Club will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Holy Name of Mary School cafeteria. Proceeds from this event will go to local charities.

Christmas Craft Fair at Blessed Sacrament Church will be held on Saturday, Nov. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It will take place in McKeon Hall at 201 N. Central Ave. There will be numerous vendors, pictures with Santa, entertainment, raffles, food and door prizes. For more information call (516) 568-1027.

Antiques and Collectibles, a lecture and evaluation by Kenneth Powers, will be presented by the Valley Stream Historical Society on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. Bring one item for evaluation. Fall Bazaar at the Green Acres Senior Center will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 2 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bazaar will feature items created by the seniors in their sewing, knitting and arts and crafts workshops, along with freshly baked goods and other specialties. Library opens at 10 a.m.

Library Will Be Closed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veteran's Day and on Thursday, Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving. The library re-opens the following morning of each holiday at 10 a.m.

Library Board of Trustees will meet on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 7:30 p.m. The meeting is open to the public; ring bell at children's room entrance for admittance.

Young Adult Video Games Night will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Teens will play Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero and more. Registration is required with preference will be given to Valley Stream library cardholders.

Valley Stream Book Club meets on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. the children's room. The book to be discussed is "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. Please note that this is a change from the original date.

Young Adult Thanksgiving Crafts Night will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Teens will make a 3-D pumpkin wreath and other Thanksgiving decorations.

Children's Room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for November with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. She will be offering Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Homebound Delivery Service is available to those with a physical disability and are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. Volunteers will deliver books to your home on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis or as needed. All you need to do is to complete a short application form at the adult reference desk. Live Homework Help is available to library cardholders every day from 2 to 10 p.m. in English and Spanish. Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, will all have experts waiting to help on the library's web site. Poetry Writing Workshop with Dr. Linda Opyr will be held on Thursday, Nov. 6 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to write poetry and share what they've written.

Learn Traditional Egyptian Dance from Layla Taj on Friday, Nov. 7 at 12:30 p.m.

Parent-Child Workshop will be held on Friday, Nov. 7 at 11:30 for families with children from birth through pre-school. Professionals from community agencies will answer questions about caring for their children.

Friday Knitting Club for teens will be held on Nov. 7 and 21 at 4 p.m. This is open to girls and boys in grades 7-12.

Desktop Publishing for Adults will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 10 a.m. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to use Microsoft Word to create greeting cards, letterhead paper, transfer designs newsletters, notepaper and much more. This program is for intermediate and advanced computer users.

Veteran's Day Tribute with Shawn Weaver will be held on Saturday, Nov. 8 at 2 p.m. On July 7, 1944, Learn about Lt. Ted L. Weaver, who flew a B-24 Liberator Bomber named "Full House" into a fierce air battle over Bernberg, Germany.

Post-Election Discussion with Howard Shurdut will be held on Monday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. As of this date a new president has been chosen.Some of the issues to be discussed are wars, the economy, health care and globalization.

Caregivers Support Group will next meet on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at 3 p.m. The discussion will be led by social worker Sari Flesch.
Chi Gong Class will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 10 a.m. Cathy Anastasio will teach this ancient Chinese system of exercises or movements.

Smart Food and Fitness Choices and Diabetes Prevention will be the focus of the Cornell Cooperative Extension Class on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 11:30 a.m. Janet Maruna will be the presenter. This program is open to all Nassau County senior citizens.

A QuickBooks Training Workshop will be held each Saturday through Nov. 15, at 10 a.m. Learn to master QuickBooks Level 1with Irving Sandomer, a certified public accountant.

Book Discussion will be held on Monday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. with librarian Lee Goray. This month's selection is "The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls.


Schools

Junior High Theatrical Troupe at Valley Stream South High School will present "Honk!" a musical retelling of the Hans Christian Anderson story "The Ugly Duckling." Performances are Friday, Nov. 7 and Saturday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. in the school's cafetorium. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and tickets are available at the door. Senior citizen Gold Card holders are admitted free to both performances.

District 13 Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. in the board room at the James A. Dever School. The next regular business meeting will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m. at the Howell Road School.

District 24 Board of Education will hold its next work session on Thursday, Nov. 6 at 7:30 p.m. A work session will also be held on Thursday, No. 20 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the regular business meeting at 8:30 p.m. All meeting are held at the William L. Buck School on Horton Avenue.

District 30 Board of Education will hold its next work session on Monday, Nov. 17. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 24. Both meetings are at 8 p.m. in the Shaw Avenue School library.

Valley Stream School Districts will have a joint Board of Education meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. It will be held in the board room at Memorial Junior High School. It is anticipated that the Boards may move into executive session to discuss clerical negotiations.

Kindergarten Registration for September 2009 in District 13 under way. Children who are legal residents of the district, and will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, are eligible to register. Registration for Willow Road and Wheeler Avenue schools will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Willow Road School and for Howell Road School on Wednesday, Nov. 19. Registration hours are 9 to 11 a.m. for last names A-L and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for last names M-Z. Registration packets are available on the district's Web site, www.valleystream13.com.

Health

Community Education Program on asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease will be hosted by Franklin Hospital's Respiratory Therapy staff on Tuesday, Nov. 11 from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. It will be held in Room R37 in the hospital's radiology department. It is an open forum so participants can come anytime during the program. The discussion will review prevention, care and treatment of asthma and COPD, covering all ages. Ask the Nutritionist will be held on Wednesday, Nov.12 at 11 a.m. Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will lead a discussion on the book "The Sex Life of Food."

Health Assessments with nurse June Friedel will be held at the Elmont Memorial Library on Saturday, Nov. 29 at 10 a.m. She will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring. She will also be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling.

Molloy College, in collaboration with FEGS Health and Human Services System and other community partners, will host a seminar, "End of Life Care: Fostering an Interdisciplinary Team Approach," on Friday, Nov. 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The conference will provide an opportunity for health and human service professionals to explore the key issues in end-of-life, or palliative, care. It will enable attendees to develop greater confidence in the practice of palliative care in their own clinical areas and in multi-professional teams.
