Village Board of Trustees will hold its next regular business meeting on Monday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Valley Stream Fire Department is hosting a Haunted House during October at the Brooklyn Avenue Firehouse. It will be open Friday and Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 6 to 10 p.m. During Halloween week, the haunted house will also be open on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 11 p.m. The last day of operation will be Halloween night, Friday, Oct. 31. Pumpkin Painting Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Hendrickson Park adjacent to the mini-golf course. Children ages 5-8 will paint at 10 a.m. and children ages 9-12 at 11 a.m. Pumpkins will be judged after a half-hour in two categories: scariest and funniest. All materials will be provided. Halloween Costume Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Hendrickson Park gazebo. Times are 1:30 p.m. for children 3 and under, 2 p.m. for children 4-6 and 2:30 p.m. for children 7 and older. All participants will receive mini-pumpkin treats. Halloween Happenings will be held at the Hendrickson Park administration building on Friday, Oct. 31. There will be games, hayrides, pumpkin decorating, candy, juice and cookies. Times are available every half-hour from 4 to 7 p.m. Call the recreation department at (516) 825-8570 to reserve a spot.

Kids Costume Contest hosted by the Valley Stream Historical Society will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. Adults can enter, too. British Veterans of America Nassau County chapter will hold a Halloween-themed social dance on Saturday, Nov. 1 from 8 p.m. to midnight. Pancake Breakfast hosted by the Valley Stream Lions Club will be held on Sunday, Nov. 9 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Holy Name of Mary School cafeteria. Proceeds from this event will go to local charities.
Antiques and Collectibles, a lecture and evaluation by Kenneth Powers, will be presented by the Valley Stream Historical Society on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 8 p.m. Bring one item for evaluation. Young Adult Halloween Crafts Night will be held on Friday, Oct. 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Make Halloween decorations for your house. Come in costume and enjoy some treats. Registration is required.
Book Club next meets on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. The book to be discussed this month is "The Lighthouse" by P.D. James.
Children's Halloween Parade will be held on Friday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. After hearing some spooky Halloween stories, the children will march around the library to display their costumes. Treats will be available for all. Registration is required.
Young Adult Fall Reading Club runs through Friday, Oct. 31. This year's theme is "Books With Bite." All students in grades 6-12 can participate in the program by reading and reviewing one book.
Three Computer Classes will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1. An Internet Basics and Library Databases class will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m to 12:15 p.m. followed by Microsoft Excel Basics from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.
Children's Room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for October with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. She will be offering Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Live Homework Help is available to library cardholders every day from 2 to 10 p.m. in English and Spanish. Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, will all have experts waiting to help on the library's web site. Homebound Delivery Service is available to those with a physical disability and are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. Volunteers will deliver books to your home on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis or as needed. All you need to do is to complete a short application form at the adult reference desk. Long Island's Most Haunted is the theme for Cafe Time on Friday, Oct. 31 at 12:30 p.m. Historian and best-selling author Monica Randall will share some true stories of spectral beings who sometime show up on film. Learn about some of Long Islands most intriguing manor houses with their labyrinths of secret passageways, hidden chambers, deserted tunnels and mysterious events.
Voice of Grandparents Support Group will be held on Friday, Oct. 24 at 9:30 a.m. This is a discussion group led by social worker Sari Flesch. Coffee and cookies will be served.
Creative Writing Workshop with Harold Kalter will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 10 a.m.

Fantastic Four Basketball Tournament for District 13 will be held on Friday, Oct. 24 at 6:15 p.m. in the Memorial Junior High School gymnasium. Teams from the Dever, Howell, Wheeler and Willow schools will compete against each other.
Kindergarten Registration for September 2009 in District 13 will soon begin. Children who are legal residents of the district, and will be 5 years old on or before Dec. 1, 2008, are eligible to register. Registration will take place on the following dates: James A. Dever School on Wednesday, Nov. 6; Willow Road and Wheeler Avenue schools on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at Willow Road School; and Howell Road School on Wednesday, Nov. 20. Registration hours are 9 to 11 a.m. for last names A-L and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for last names M-Z. Flu and Pneumonia Shots for senior citizens will be available at Franklin Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Seniors will have no out-of-pocket costs for these shots provided they have active Medicare B. Those who are 21 or older and do not have Medicare B, regardless of age, will be charged $25 per flu vaccination and $30 per pneumonia vaccine.
