Architectural Review Board will hold its next meeting on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall board room.

Valley Stream Fire Department is hosting a Haunted House during October. It will be located at the Brooklyn Avenue Firehouse. Hours of operation are Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 6 to 10 p.m. During Halloween week, the haunted house will also be open on Wednesday and Thursday from 7 to 11 p.m. The last day of operation will be Halloween night, Friday, Oct. 31. Pumpkin Painting Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Hendrickson Park adjacent to the mini-golf course. Children ages 5-8 will paint at 10 a.m. and children ages 9-12 at 11 a.m. Pumpkins will be judged after a half-hour in two categories: scariest and funniest. All materials will be provided. Halloween Costume Contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25 at the Hendrickson Park gazebo. Times are 1:30 p.m. for children 3 and under, 2 p.m. for children 4-6 and 2:30 p.m. for children 7 and older. All participants will receive mini-pumpkin treats. Halloween Happenings will be held at the Hendrickson Park administration building on Friday, Oct. 31. There will be games, hayrides, pumpkin decorating, candy, juice and cookies. Times are available every half-hour from 4 to 7 p.m. Call the recreation department at (516) 825-8570 to reserve a spot.
Events
Thrivent Sponsored Fall Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Rockaway and Dubois avenues. There will be baskets, fall and Christmas items, White Elephant items, jewelry, clothing, baked good and raffles. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Lions Club Annual Flea Market will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hendrickson pool parking lot. There will be mums and pumpkins on sale, as well as numerous vendors selling antiques, collectibles, tools, toys, medical supplies, arts and crafts, household items, jewelry and clothing. Candidates Debate hosted by the Southwest Nassau League of Women Voters will be held at the Elmont Library on Monday, Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. Candidates from all parties in the 4th District Congressional, 7th District New York State Senate and 21st District New York State Assembly races have been invited. The public is most welcome to attend and there will be a question period at the end.
Kids Costume Contest hosted by the Valley Stream Historical Society will be held on Sunday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. Adults can enter, too. Young Adult Book Discussion will be held on Friday, Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Young Adult author Niki Burnham will speak to students about her books, "Goddess Games," "Sticky Fingers" and more. Copies of "Goddess Games" will be reserved for each teen to read in advance of the program. Autographed copies of her books will be raffled off to attendees. Registration is required.
Young Adult Halloween Crafts Night will be held on Friday, Oct. 25 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Make Halloween decorations for your house. Come in costume and enjoy some treats. Registration is required.
Book Club next meets on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. The book to be discussed this month is "The Lighthouse" by P.D. James.
Children's Halloween Parade will be held on Friday, Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. After hearing some spooky Halloween stories, the children will march around the library to display their costumes. Treats will be available for all. Registration is required.
Young Adult Fall Reading Club runs through Friday, Oct. 31 to celebrate Teen Read Week. This year's theme is "Books With Bite" All students in grades 6-12 can participate in the program by reading and reviewing one book.
Three Computer Classes will be held on Saturday, Nov. 1. An Internet Basics and Library Databases class will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m to 12:15 p.m. followed by Microsoft Excel Basics from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration is required.
Children's Room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for October with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. She will be offering Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Live Homework Help is available to library cardholders every day from 2 to 10 p.m. in English and Spanish. Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, will all have experts waiting to help on the library's web site. Homebound Delivery Service is available to those with a physical disability and are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. Volunteers will deliver books to your home on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis or as needed. All you need to do is to complete a short application form at the adult reference desk. How to Beat the High Cost of College will be held on Thursday, Oct. 23 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Barry Fox, a college financial aid expert, will bring the latest in financial aid news for high school students and parents.
Library Board of Trustees will hold its next regular meeting on Thursday, Oct. 23. An executive session begin at 7 p.m. followed by the public portion of the meeting at 8 p.m.
Book Discussion will be held on Monday, Oct. 27 at 2 and 6 p.m. with librarian, Patricia Magee. This month's selection is "America America " by Ethan Caning.

District 13 Board of Education will hold its next committee meeting on Monday, Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. in the district board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Wheeler Avenue School.
District 24 Board of Education will hold its next work session on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m. followed by the regular business meeting at 8:30 p.m. at the William L. Buck School.
District 30 Board of Education will hold its next work session on Monday, Oct. 20 at business meeting on Monday, Oct. 27. Both meetings are at 8 p.m. in the Shaw Avenue School library.
South High School Homecoming is on Saturday, Oct. 18. The festival begins at 10:30 a.m. followed by the ceremony at 12:45 p.m.
Marching Bands from Valley Stream Central, North and South high schools will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at Hofstra University's James M. Shuart Stadium. Each band will be allotted nine minutes on the field to showcase its spirited routine. The program kicks off at 7 p.m. and tickets may be purchased at the door.
Fantastic Four Basketball Tournament for District 13 will be held on Friday, Oct. 24 at 6:15 p.m. in the Memorial Junior High School gymnasium. Teams from the Dever, Howell, Wheeler and Willow schools will compete against each other.

Flu and Pneumonia Shots for senior citizens will be available at Franklin Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Seniors will have no out-of-pocket costs for these shots provide they have active Medicare B. Those who are 21 or older and don not have Medicare B, regardless of age, will be charged $25 per flu vaccination and $30 per pneumonia vaccine.
