Village Board of Trustees will hold its next work session on Monday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. in the Village Hall board room. The next regular business meeting will be held on Monday, Oct. 27 at 7:30 p.m. in the Village Hall court room.
Village Crafts Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This annual fall event will be held inside the A.J. Hendrickson Park along the west path.
Valley Stream Fire Department is hosting a Haunted House during October. It will be located at the Brooklyn Avenue Firehouse. Hours of operation are Fridays and Saturdays from 7 to 11 p.m. and Sundays from 6 to 10 p.m. The last day of operation will be Halloween night, Friday, Oct. 31. Events
Fall Harvest Plant Sale hosted by the Blessed Sacrament School Parents' Association will be held at McKeon Hall on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 5 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. On sale will be mums, kale, fall pansies, Montauk daisies, pumpkins, gourds and Indian corn. The hall is located at 50 Rose Ave.
Candidates Debate hosted by the Southwest League of Women Voters will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Hewlett-Woodmere Public Library. Candidates invited are from the 4th Congressional District, 9th State Senate District and 14th and 20th State Assembly districts.
Thrivent Sponsored Fall Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior, Rockaway and Dubois avenues. There will be baskets, fall and Christmas items, White Elephant items, jewelry, clothing, baked good and raffles. Lunch will be served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Lions Club Annual Flea Market will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hendrickson pool parking lot. There will be mums and pumpkins on sale, as well as numerous vendors selling antiques, collectibles, tools, toys, medical supplies, arts and crafts, household items, jewelry and clothing. Annual Community Health Fair hosted by Franklin Hospital and Orzac will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year's theme is "Feeling Great in 2008." There will be many informational exhibits on health education and prevention including stroke and cancer awareness, medication safety, epilepsy, wound care, nutrition and adult day health care. There will be screenings for cholesterol, diabetes, blood pressure, glaucoma, hearing, pulmonary function, podiatry and breast exams. The Fifth Precinct will be providing Kids Pix ID and fingerprint kits and the Malverne Fire Department members will talk about fire safety and offer tours of a truck. Look Good, Feel Better will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 from 1 to 3 p.m. in Franklin Hospital's Shankman Auditorium. This is a free program to teach women how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. Professional cosmetologists will explain special techniques to minimize the effects of skins changes and hair loss. Complimentary cosmetic kits will be provided to each participant to use at home. Cancer Support Group will meet on Monday, Oct. 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Franklin Hospital Greenberg Conference Room. It is open to all cancer survivors and their family members. Ask The Nutritionist will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Elmont Memorial Library. Alexandra Sasha Averko, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will speak about Michael Pollan's book, "The Omnivore's Dilemma." A question and answer session follows.
Nassau County Seniors are invited to attend Cornell Cooperative Extension Class "First Rate Fats" at the Elmont Library on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. This program is free.
Blood Drive will be held in Franklin Hospital's Shankman Auditorium on Tuesday, Oct. 14 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Individuals age 16 to 76 weighing at least 110 and who are in general good health are eligible to donate. Health Assessments with registered nurse June Friedel will be held at the Elmont Memorial Library on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 10 a.m. She will help identify problems associated with blood pressure, weight control and medication monitoring. Friedel will also be available to answer individual questions and for one-on-one counseling.

Three Computer Classes will be offered on Saturday, Oct. 4. The first class on Internet Basics and Library Databases will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. Some of the topics that will be covered include URLs, favorites, history, printing and useful databases. A Microsoft Word Basics class is scheduled from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. followed by Microsoft Excel Basics from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.
Young Adult Games Night will be held on Friday, Oct. 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Teens will play board games, Charades and participate in a team scavenger hunt.
Young Adult Book Discussion will be held on Friday, Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Young Adult author Niki Burnham will speak to students about her books, "Goddess Games," "Sticky Fingers" and more. Copies of "Goddess Games" will be reserved for each teen to read in advance of the program. Autographed copies of her books will be raffled off to attendees. Registration is required.
Book Club next meets on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 p.m. in the children's room. The book to be discussed this month is "The Lighthouse" by P.D. James.
Children's Room has a wide variety of programs scheduled for October with children's librarian Jaclyn Kunz. She will be offering Bouncing Babies, Alphabet Soup, Story Craft programs and other seasonal events. Live Homework Help is available to library cardholders every day from 2 to 10 p.m. in English and Spanish. Families with young children, and adults seeking to support their studies or improve their math or grammar skills, will all have experts waiting to help on the library's web site. Homebound Delivery Service is available to those with a physical disability and are unable to visit the library on a permanent or temporary basis. Volunteers will deliver books to your home on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis or as needed. All you need to do is to complete a short application form at the adult reference desk. Babies in Motion will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 10:15 a.m. This program is open to children age 1-3 with a participating adult. Enjoy movement, fingerplays and popular children's songs.
Chair Yoga With Mary will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 1 p.m. This is a class suitable for all levels and will help participants learn to listen to their bodies with gentle stretching and breathing.
Ancient Art of Mehndi with Sanghvi Bharati will be held on Monday, Oct. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Change the look of your hands by using henna, an all-natural vegetable-based dye to adorn your skin with intricate patterns from different cultures around the world.
Tuesday Feature Film for Oct. 7 is "Prime." The movie begins at 2 p.m. and is rated PG-13.
Chi Gong Class will be held on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. The program is led by instructor Cathy Anastasio.

Central High School's Homecoming festivities kick off at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 as the homecoming parade comes through Firemen's Field.
