Village OKs raise for part-timers

The Rockville Centre Board of Trustees unanimously approved a pay increase for the village’s 150 part-time workers at its Dec. 9 meeting.

Part-timers’ pay will increase by 2 percent, which will cost the village approximately $25,000 more per year. The change went into effect immediately, retroactive to Dec. 1.

“The increase was to keep up with inflation,” said Comptroller Michael Schussheim. “And it reflected the same percentage increase that the [Civil Service Employees Association] employees received on Dec. 1 of this year.”

Schussheim explained that CSEA workers were given a contractual 2 percent raise. But since part-time workers have no union representation, they get no contractual raises. So the village board stepped in on their behalf.

The board also approved the same increase for the village’s seasonal workers, which will go into effect next May 1. Schussheim did not know the exact cost for the village, but he said it would be smaller than the part-time workers’ increase.

The number of seasonal workers, which the village generally employs from May through September, is variable. “It runs the gamut,” Schussheim said.
