At no cost to Rockville Centre property taxpayers, New York state EXCEL program funds willbe used in combination with state building aid. The total state allocation amounts to
$1.7 million.
According to the Rockville Centre Board of Education, the district will utilize the funding for a number of projects focusing on health and safety issues as well as educational technology. In addition, the following areas either have been addressed or will be in the upcoming school year: interior and exterior security camera installations in all buildings; classroom and office heating and ventilation repairs; locker room repairs; ceiling, door and light replacements in classrooms; science lab upgrades; the addition of interactive SmartBoards; masonry repairs; bathroom repairs and renovations; the installation of sensor-operated faucets; and repairs to floor tiles, hallway ceilings, stairways and auditoriums.
"We are finalizing the last group of projects from the bond issue authorization·e are finishing up on the boys' and girls' main bathrooms in the high school on the first and second floors, replacing stair treads on some of the stairwells in the high school, and there have been repairs to the Home and Careers room in the middle school," said Robert Bartels, assistant superintendent for business. "We are also building bookshelves and cabinets for the elementary school buildings."
Overall, the implementation of the projects by way of the bond issue authorization, together with the district's 2008-09 budget, will provide additional benefits to the community both now and in the future, according to statements by the Board of Education. The district's goal in the utilization of these funds is to "maintain all basic educational services to students·according to the board, while making cuts in areas that will not negatively impact students.
