Village taxes on the rise

Village officials blame the larger-than-usual tax increases on the state-mandated six-fold increase in retirement fund contributions and a 13.5 percent increase in insurance costs.
East Rockaway's $6.7 million budget raises the tax rate $3.28, to $18.42 per $100 of assessed value, and increases taxes by 13.07 percent. A homeowner with an average assessed home value of $8,400 can expect a tax bill of $1,547.28. This is a $275.52 increase over this year.
In Lynbrook, village officials were able to shrink a projected 19.4 percent tax increase to 14.78 percent. The village's tax rate will increase $1.52, to $11.80 per $100 of assessed value. This means an average homeowner with a home assessed at $25,000 will pay a $2,950 tax bill, up $380 from this year.
Malverne residents will see the smallest tax increase, 9.9 percent, but the largest tax rate increase, $3.81, bringing the tax rate to $42.09. This means a resident with an assessed home value of $5,500 can expect a village tax bill of $2,314.95. This is up $209.55 from this year.
