"We hope this initiative will attract additional holiday shoppers to the downtown areas and help support the business community," said Mayor Mary Whalen Bossart. "If the program is successful, we will consider implementing it again next year," she said.
The Village has joined with the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce to implement and monitor this new program which will provide free parking both on-street and in municipal lots on Saturdays, December 1, 8, 15 and 22.
Ed Oppenheimer, a board member of the Rockville Centre Chamber of Commerce, who represented the chamber's position to the village board, said, "The village was extremely receptive to the chamber's request to make this every weekend in December before Christmas. The Chamber of Commerce is very happy with the free shopper parking and representatives from the chamber are going to walk around and monitor how well it works and report back to the village to hopefully improve the program."
Oppenheimer added that more information on local shopping can be found at www.rvcchamber.com. The village also announced that while parking will be free, the regular time limits and the restrictions against employee parking, as well as all safety regulations, will be strictly enforced.
