South Side High School’s volleyball team joined with the Side-Out Foundation to raise money for the fight against breast cancer on Oct. 16.

The annual Dig-Pink event, hosted by the Lady Cyclones, was a volleyball match against Hewlitt and every player wore pink.

Through the efforts of Lady Cyclone Deanna Mostowfi, who coordinated the event, Coach Cheryl Scalice, and the players and their families, the Dig-Pink game raised $1,077.

In addition the girls raised $535 in bake sale revenue and $2,020 in donations through the Side-Out Foundation website.  Breast Cancer Awareness month is not over yet and the team is still working to achieve its goal of $5,000.

Rick Dunetz started the Side-Out Foundation in 2004, when he turned to his volleyball team for support in raising money for his mother’s fight against breast cancer. He wanted other teams to experience the same power of giving and growing which led him to open up the challenge of raising money to fight breast cancer to clubs and teams nationwide.

The Side-Out Foundation and Dig Pink events bring together the idea that two teams in competition with one another can inspire men and women coping with cancer.
