Volunteers needed for cancer care

Weight management



Research has shown that excess weight is associated with heart disease, diabetes, hypertension and cancer. Yet, approximately 60% of the population in the United States is overweight. Those interested in managing their weight and protecting their health can attend Winthrop-University Hospital's "Perspective in Health" free lecture, "Weight Management...Gain Control of Your Health," on Tuesday, April 16. The program will begin with registration at 6:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 7 p.m. It will be held at the Winthrop Community Outreach Center, 101 Mineola Boulevard, Mineola. Mageda Mikhail, MD, medical director of the Weight Management Program at Winthrop, will discuss strategies to manage weight and the different options available to treat this chronic condition. Coping with WTC



Coping with your reactions to the World Trade Center disaster and procrastination are just two of the topics to be discussed as part of the South Nassau Communities Hospital and Barry and Florence Friedberg South Shore Y JCC 2002 Spring Seminar Series.The series, which will also offer presentations on anger management and interpersonal effectiveness, is free to members of the South Shore Y and $5 per person, per seminar for non-members."This annual series has been designed to provide the community with current, expert information on managing feelings resulting from traumatic experiences and on common behavioral health problems that all of us have confronted at one time or another," said Thomas Demaria, Ph.D., administrative director of Behavioral Health Services at South Nassau. "The information and advice we offer will facilitate an awareness of the problem and provide strategies that will help manage and overcome the problem."The following is a list of health lectures and programs:

Bio-terrorism discussed at Hewlett FD



The Hewlett Fire Department headquarters building on Franklin Avenue in Hewlett will be the site of a special presentation on the topic of Bio-Terrorism during Wednesday, April 17. Guest speakers from Franklin Hospital Medical Center will be Emergency Department Director John Rohe, M.D., left, and Cardiologist Edward T. Davison, M.D. Free to the community, the program will start at 7:30 p.m. and also feature an on-site familiarization of the fully equipped HAZ-MAT vehicle operated by the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System.


Revlon Run/Walk for Women set for May 4



Nassau University Center is participating in the 2002 5K Revlon Run/Walk for Women on Saturday, May 4 in Manhattan. The event raises funds in the fight against women's cancers.Brochures containing registration forms are being placed in area stores and restaurants. You can also obtain a brochure at the Information Desk in the main lobby at NUMC, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike or from the Public Affairs office in Room 107. The fee to register by Saturday, April 27 is $20 (after that date, the fee is $25). Checks should be made payable to the Revlon Run/Walk for Women. Teams will gather for opening ceremonies in Times Square by 8:15 a.m. The Run/Walk begins at 7th Avenue and 48th Street at 9:15 a.m. and winds its way to Central Park.Call Public Affairs Department at NUMC at (516) 572-6055 for more details.
