In an election year, it's fairly easy to pick the candidate most willing and capable to serve as a trustee. This year, incumbent Charles Goldberg is clearly that person. During his 12 years on the board, serving for three of those as vice president and one as president, Goldberg has proven that he is worthy of serving as a school trustee.
True, the Herald hasn't always agreed with the decisions of the East Meadow school board on which Goldberg serves, but that doesn't impugn his overall record of service.
During his tenure, the district passed a $52.5 million bond issue to expand school facilities, and has attained an "A" Moody's Bond rating, the highest rating in district history. In the classroom, students have excelled, and the district's music program has become perhaps the best in the state.
Robert Daly, Goldberg's chief opponent, has his heart in the right place. With his children now in the local public schools, he's committed to fiscal responsibility and opening communication between the board and the community -- both admirable causes.
Daly, however, has been absent from all district budget presentations this year, and hasn't demonstrated a clear understanding of the financial practices that he criticizes. He also seldom attended any public board meetings.
What's more is that Daly, if elected, intends to serve on the board for only one three-year term. It's doubtful that a freshman trustee with no previous elected experience would be able to fully grasp the ins and outs of the job, let alone effect any serious change, in that short time.
Gary Gold, the third candidate vying for Goldberg's seat, has been absent in the month since petitions were filed to get him on the ballot and doesn't deserve serious consideration.
Vote for Charles Goldberg on June 3.
