With 475 yes and 136 no votes, the turnout was nearly triple that of a December vote on a slightly higher bond, which residents defeated.
The $6,315,410 bond will pay for capital improvements in the district's three elementary schools -- Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Shore Road School and Winthrop Avenue School. The projects include repairs to roofing, windows, masonry and steam traps, as well as alarm-system replacements to meet fire code requirements. From the original bond proposal in December, the amount was reduced by about $300,000, which was to renovate the Reinhard School's auditorium.
The district expects to recoup about $4.49 million of the expenditures in state-aid reimbursements, including close to $4.1 million for roofing repairs over an average useful life of 20 years, and an immediate reimbursement in one-time state Excel Aid, which could mean close to another $395,000 returned to the district's coffers once spent.
