Voters say yes to school, library budgets

In unofficial results Tuesday night, the 2009-10 budget of $90.065 million passed with 1,911 votes, just under 63 percent of the total votes cast, while 1,140 residents - just over 37 percent - voted against it.
District residents also returned incumbent Mark Masin to the Board of Education for a third term, with 1,629 votes. Newcomer Liz Dion won a three-year term as a board trustee as well, garnering 1,949 votes.
The public library's budget of just under $3 million also passed, with 1,959 "yes" votes to 901 "no's." Library Trustee Eileen Burke Bucaria captured another term with 1,996 votes. Library board newcomer Vito Iacobellis took the other available seat, collecting 1,534 votes.
"I'm absolutely thrilled," said school Superintendent Dr. William Johnson. "My hat's off to the community for supporting our spending plan to provide the quality education they've come to expect."
Kathy Horace, school board vice president, said, "I'm thrilled. I thank the community for coming out and supporting the budget."
Library director Maureen Chiofalo said,"We're thrilled, and we hope to continue to serve the community the best we can. We want to thank them for their vote of confidence."
District Clerk Cynthia Geones reported that 3,120 voters turned out Tuesday, up from 2,793 last year and close to the 3,460 who voted in 2007.
