Keith Striga, of Striga and Associates, located in Valley Stream, working with Phil Gavosto of Gavosto Associates, submitted the winning design earlier this year. Their design was chosen in June after being judged against more than 20 submissions.
The memorial will feature two steel girders recovered from Ground Zero and a plaque with the names of the 275 Nassau County residents killed in the attack.
"There has been a lot of media exposure from the current designs for Ground Zero in Manhattan," Striga said. "Our site in Eisenhower Park, for approximately 275 Nassau County victims, will allow the visitor to experience the essence of how the towers appeared in what I would sum up as an impressionistic reality, as a 'ghost-like' representation."
Two semitransparent, interconnected towers made of polished aluminum will be at the center of the memorial. They will be placed on a pedestal of granite and will rise over 30 feet above a reflecting pool shaped to represent the geography of lower Manhattan. The memorial also features a plaque with a narrative on Sept. 11 and a Rescuers Wall dedicated to the New York City Fire and Police Departments and Port Authority Police.
The unveiling is scheduled for 2004.
Besides heading his own firm, Striga is an adjunct professor of architecture at New York Institute of Technology and is the founder of Wet-Paint FX, Inc., a team of professional architectural and graphic designers.
