According to detectives, just before 7 p.m., Joseph Lucas, 18, of Malverne, was driving his 1995 Pontiac Grand Am eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike when he attempted to make a left turn on Pacific Avenue and collided with a westbound 2001 Ford pickup truck driven by Joseph Errico, 34, of Franklin Square.
The impact sent the truck onto the sidewalk at the corner of Hempstead Turnpike and Pacific Avenue, where Richard and Dorothy Costleigh, ages 64 and 62, of North Corona Avenue, Valley Stream, were walking. They were struck by and pinned under the truck, police said. The Pontiac jumped the curb, went through some shrubbery and struck a car parked in a parking lot.
Richard Costleigh was taken to Mercy Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:23 p.m. His wife was taken to Winthrop University Medical Center, where she died Wednesday morning. Lucas was taken to Mercy for treatment of neck pain. Danielle Montefusco, 17, a passenger in the Pontiac, was transported to Winthrop University Hospital for a possible broken ankle.
The Highway Patrol Bureau responded to the accident and performed brake/safety checks on both vehicles at the scene. No summonses were issued.
