Village tends to library and Arlington Park projects
In hopes of alleviating the short supply of municipal parking spaces in the Village of Valley Stream, ground was broken for a 32-space parking lot adjacent to the Henry Waldinger Memorial Library last week.
Construction began on the new parking lot alongside the Library on Friday, September 16. The long-awaited project is expected to be completed in the next 45 working days, according to Vincent Ang, village clerk.
Marshall Botwinick, library director said he is certain the new parking lot will ease the competition for parking spaces. "It will ease up the congestion," he said.
Mr. Ang said there will be approximately 32 straight striped spaces in the lot for cars. The village clerk said that 20 of the spots will be open to the public and the remainder would be reserved for library employees. "We're so tight now for parking that it will help us as well as the public," said Mr. Ang.
A two-hour time limit is expected to be placed on the spots used for library patrons, according to Mr. Ang. The village clerk reported that there will be no meters in the new lot, only signs limiting parking time. Parking regulations behind Village Hall are monitored by Code Enforcement Officers. Mr. Ang said time limits are being placed on the parking spots so that cars used by commuters do not use the new spaces.
R&R Blacktop Corporation of West Babylon will perform the work on the lot. Mr. Ang said the new lot, when finished, will measure approximately 100 by 100 feet. An active roadway will remain near the library with a main entrance to the lot on Verona Avenue. The village decided not to put an entrance to the parking lot on Valley Stream Boulevard, because that would restrict the number of available spaces, said Mr. Ang.
The village is spending approximately $58,000 on the project, according to the village clerk.
