As many as 700 Valley Stream Soccer Club players and their families participated in a Walk-a-Thon on Saturday to show support for the families of WTC attack victims, and to help raise money to help them.
"Our aim is to raise funds for the children who lost parents in the tragedy of Sept. 11," said Paul Tuscano, president of the Valley Stream Soccer Club.
"This is great for the soccer club to bring the whole soccer family together like this," said Coach Bob Isaacson, as the walk in Hendrickson Park began. "All you parents are setting the best of examples for the community and for your children, to show unity and caring. As we walk around the lake today, we should reflect on why we are all here."
Mayor Ed Cahill spoke to the children and parents before the walk. "it is a great idea what the club is doing today, and great for the people who have lost someone. It is especially important and good that the parents have come out today to walk with their children, to show that we are all supporting each other in these difficult days."
"We were very successful," Pat Isaacson said on Tuesday. "We raised almost $13,000. We had several of the families there that were affected," and the money will be put to good use.
Coaches Bob and Pat Isaacson, and Phil Doerrbecker, the Club's treasurer, were instrumental in organizing the walk-a-thon.
Mary Clarke of Abat Promotions & Recognition in Manhattan designed and obtained all the specially imprinted tee-shirts at cost, and Office Max in Lawrence donated all the copying and signage.
