Two students from the Valley Stream Central High School District were recognized for their artwork at the Art Guild’s 2015 Nassau County Student Exhibition and Competition, a month-long exhibition held at the Elderfields Preserve in Manhasset.

North High School senior Carla Perez earned second place and Central High School junior Kimberly Rambarran won third place. Central junior Cathleen Liang was awarded an honorable mention for her work. The two winners were among six award recipients at the event, which ran from Oct. 31 through Nov. 29, and displayed more than 50 pieces from students throughout Nassau County. The Art Guild, which arranged the event, is a nonprofit organization that says it aims to encourage and educate communities about the visual arts by offering opportunities to broaden their creative pursuits.

“These awards are a testament to not only the students’ hard work, but also to all of the art teachers in the Valley Stream Central High School District who do such an outstanding job of inspiring all of the young artists in their classes every day,” said Adam Erdos, district coordinator of fine and performing arts. “They all deserve our congratulations for these achievements.”

Teachers assisted all three students through the submission and exhibition processes. Carla was advised by Allan Nafte in submitting her self-portrait, “The Artist’s Shoes.” Mario Bakalov guided Kimberly, who entered a white charcoal drawing titled “Small Glass,” and Cathleen, who created the pencil drawing “Self Portrait.”

Along with Carla, Kimberly and Cathleen, North High School students Nicolette Duggan, Katie Eng, Alexandra Mashcow, Tiffany Praimnath, Jamie Selletti, Devika Shastri and Alexandra Valmé had their work featured in the gallery.
