The Oceanside Library will host the following events for the month of June:
Travelogue: Alaska and the Canadian Rockies. Join world travelers Irma and Bob Mandel as they explore the cultures and rugged natural beauty of these increasingly popular vacation destination, at 2 p.m. on June 16.
Cooking Demo: Lazy Days of Summer. Chef Lucian Veneziano cooks up an assortment of tasty and unusual treats to compliment any backyard barbecue, at 7:30 .m. on June 21. Registration is required.
Lecture: The Genius of the Gardens (Part I of three-part series). Join representatives from Old Westbury Gardens as they explore the fascinating evolution of garden design starting with the ancient worlds of Persia, Japan and China, at 2 p.m. on June 22.
Lecture: Scaling Down - Living Large in a Smaller Space. Organizational expert Judi Culbertson invites you to streamline your life by clearing the clutter from your home and making room for the things you love, at 2 p.m. on June 29.

Bridge games
Whether you're a novice or a seasoned player, the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC (15 Neil Court, Oceanside) has a duplicate bridge game for you. Facilitated by Marie Fiorillo, this on-going game takes place every Tuesday, 1-4 p.m. You will be matched with other participants at your level of experience - whether you're a beginner or an experienced player looking for some handy tips. JCC's garden club
Get set for planting at The Gardening Club at the Barry and Florence Friedberg JCC, 15 Neil Court, Oceanside. The club meets the first and third Tuesday of every month. From 11:30 a.m. noon is lunch (bring your own) and chat followed by programs from noon to 1 p.m. (noon to 1:30 p.m. for Cornell Cooperative Extension Horticulture Programs).
Craft fair
A Country Craft Fair will be held at the Schoolhouse Green on Foxhurst Avenue in Oceanside on June 25 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. rain or shine. Sponsored by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, the annual outdoor festival will feature arts and crafts vendors, general merchandise, antiques and collectibles, community displays from local businesses, food and some exciting new events.
Fairgoers will be ready to travel abroad by summer's end if they step into to the Town of Hempstead "Speedy Pass" Passport Services mobile. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., prospective world travelers can fill out an application, get a passport photo and pay passport fees to receive a passport in the mail in about six weeks. Fingerprinting of children for safety ID will also be available.
Kamp Kiwanis pony rides will begin at noon, and donations for a ride will help Oceanside Kiwanis send needy children to camp this summer.
Bide-a-Wee of Wantagh will be on hand this year with some therapy pets to meet and greet fairgoers. Children can take paws to try reading a story to one of the animals who participate in Bide-a-Wee's "Reading to Dogs" program offered to local grade schools.
Information will also be available on how to adopt a Bide-a-wee pet.
Creative writing
Barbara Novack, award-winning writer and member of Molloy College's English Department, will host the summer creative writing series, "Discovering the Writer Within: A Creative Writing Workshop" at the Oceanside Library on Thursdays, July 7, July 21, August 4, and August 18 at 11:00 a.m.
Barbara invites writers of all levels to attend one or all of these workshops, which are designed to help writers grow through exploring concepts and sharing their work with others. Through exercises and verbal and visual prompts, participants will learn how to tap into their creativity and use words in wonderful ways. This program is free and open to all. Scale Down at the O'side Library
Organizational expert Judi Culbertson teaches you how to streamline your life by clearing the clutter from your home and turning it into the place you have always wanted it to be at the Oceanside Library on Wednesday, June 29, at 2 p.m.
Author of the book, Scaling Down: Living Large in Smaller Space, Culbertson will show you how discarding outdated items will allow you both the physical and emotional freedom to make room for what is most important. If you are an empty nester, are moving from a house to an apartment, or just think you have too much "stuff," this is the program for you.

fund-raiser for neighbor
A fundraiser will be held in memory of Oceanside native Chester Manel and his fight against Lou Gehrig's Disease. The fundraiser will be held at Tra' Fade bar, 3116 Long Beach Road in Oceanside, at 2 p.m. on June 26. Food and BBQ, 50/50 raffles. Bring photos and memories of Chester to share Admission Fee: $10.
Free concert by Nassau Pops
The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra will be performing a free, outdoor concert at Memorial Park on Marcellus Road on Friday, July 8, at 8 p.m. The concert will feature singers Jack and Ann Cassin and the 14-year-old violin virtuoso Jeremy Stein Cushman. The rain location for the concert will be the Mineola Middle School. The park is handicap accessible and attendees are asked to provide their own seating. For more information call (516) 565-0646.
'Safe sitter' program offered
Mercy Medical Center believes that "better sitters make for better parents tomorrow." That's why their Education and Development Department is sponsoring a safe sitter babysitter education program for children between the ages of 11 and 13 who are interested in developing child-care skills. Important lifesaving skills and information on handling emergency situations will also be taught. The class will take place on July 8, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The fee is $45 and spaces are limited.
