Watching hawks

Posted

“Hawk Watches” will be presented by Michael Farina at the South Shore Audubon Society Meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 10. The meeting is 7:30 p.m. at the Freeport Memorial Library, 144 W. Merrick Road (at S. Ocean Avenue). He is director at the Oceanside Marine Nature Study Area (MNSA).

Hawk watches assist in the monitoring and protection of hawks, eagles, other birds of prey and their environments. Similar efforts around the country and world help protect our shared environment, our natural heritage, and ourselves. Farina will discuss the Hawk Watch and data that has been collected at MNSA and go over some of the other local Hawk Watch locations. He will also share some of this year’s data and sightings.

Michael Farina, a certified wildlife biologist, is a recipient of the South Shore Audubon Society’s Elliott Kutner Conservation Award. He provides inspiring learning experiences for students from primary schools to universities. MNSA is a certified GLOBE Program site as a result of his efforts. He also facilitated construction of an osprey platform and created an osprey web cam operation there.
