During a May 22 dinner at the Inn at New Hyde Park, APWA honored 10 of the most outstanding public works professionals from across the United States and Canada for their professionalism, expertise and career-long dedication and service. Marking the 49th year of the award, the distinction is among the most coveted and prestigious presented by the association.
"The American Public Works Association's top ten award is given to outstanding leaders for their work accomplishments. It is the highest award the organization gives each year," said Noel Thompson, president-elect of the APWA. "The APWA is a nearly 30,000 member organization with 64 chapters throughout the United States and Canada, and to be selected from that body puts the recipient in elite company. This is the 49th class of top ten award winners. Harry's application, which was submitted by the New York Metro chapter, was outstanding and represented his career in the greater New York area. He exemplifies all the qualities that one would hope to find in a public works professional. The village of Rockville Centre is fortunate to have such a leader on its staff."
In his position for the village, Weed supervises the Highway Division, which handles road maintenance and tree-trimming; the Sewer Department which takes care of the pump stations, sanitary and storm sewers; the Sanitation Department and the Central Garage. He also oversees parking meter and console repairs and maintenance, street sweeping, road opening permits and sidewalk inspection programs.
Weed's managerial accomplishments include presenting a class in Weapons of Mass Destruction Awareness to the Village Sanitation Department staff and meter readers; presenting, on behalf of the New York Conference of Mayors, Public Works Planning Commission, a program for public works schools on plastics recycling, dealing with board members and new superintendent training, the selection by APWA to attend the Third National Conference on Strengthening the Public Safety Response to Terrorism and Other Hazards.
"Harry has contributed to the overall success of APWA - locally, regionally and nationally," said Howard B. LaFever, former APWA Director of Region II.
A member of APWA's Facilities & Ground Technical Committee since 2005, Weed is currently chairing the committee through September 2009. He is a past president of the New York Metropolitan chapter, chaired the chapter's Governmental Affairs Committee in 2003, and is the chapter's current delegate, acting in that capacity since 2005.
