Guest speaker will be clinical hypnotherapist Anna Rossetti, speaking on "What's Weighing You Down?...New Thinking On Weight Loss." She will discuss and illustrate how hypnosis can be used to achieve weight loss. The group will meet in the hospital's Shankman Auditorium.
The speaker will also address how a person's thoughts and emotions can affect their weight and inability to lose those extra pounds. What most dieters need in order to be successful is a way to shift those negative self-defeating thoughts to more adaptive, positive statements. Coordinator Kathy Bradfield, said, "If you've 'tried everything' and still can't seem to lose weight, this program is for you."
To register, and for additional information about this new series of community education programs, call Bradfield at (516) 256-6442.
Free alcohol screening
April is Alcohol Awareness Month and North Shore University Hospital at Glen Cove has joined a national grassroots campaign to raise public awareness that alcoholism is a treatable and preventable disease, and that family members need help, too.
The latest statistics reveal that more than nine million children live with a parent dependent on alcohol and/or illegal drugs, and more than half of all adults have a family history of alcoholism or problem drinking. Alcohol remains the drug of choice among teenagers, and recent studies indicate that nearly one-quarter of eighth graders and half of all seniors reported drinking during the past month. In addition, alcoholism and chemical dependency affect a wide circle of people close to the substance abuser: relatives, friends, neighbors, employers, co-workers, classmates, teachers, health professionals. It is also linked closely to many of America's most difficult social problems such as crime, domestic violence, teen pregnancy and homelessness.
On Thursday, April 11, the Division of Substance Abuse Services at NSUH at Glen Cove, in conjunction with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, will offer free confidential meetings with substance abuse counselors as part of the alcohol screening program at the hospital's Community House, 101 St. Andrew's Lane, Glen Cove, 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
To make an appointment for a confidential, one-on-one meeting with a therapist, or for more information, call the Community House at (516) 674-7852.
