We'll report on school news, local sports, crimes and police activity, local taxes, the school districts' budgets and their impact on yours, business and Chamber of Commerce news, civic associations' plans and actions, local government decisions, student achievements, social events, profiles of community newsmakers and features on organizations and individuals that are making a difference in your communities. We'll let you know what your county, town and village leaders are doing, and what we think, and what you think, they ought to be doing.
And we'll do all this on a continuing basis, providing coverage of the issues of concern to the people of West Hempstead and Malverne, participating in those communities by finding out and reporting on all the local news that you care about.
A good community newspaper also serves as a readers' roundtable for the exchange of ideas and opinions on current local issues. Our mission won't just be to present and analyze the news and how it affects you. No newspaper has a monopoly on wisdom, and no one has the only valid perspective on important issues. We'll be the place in which you, the readers, can communicate with your neighbors and let them know your views. We hope you'll see the Malverne/West Hempstead Herald as a weekly forum on the issues and events that make your communities unique.
Beyond our news and opinion pages, you'll find dozens of advertisements each week from your local and nearby businesses, merchants and professionals, letting you know about goods and services available locally. Your commercial community is an essential part of what makes Malverne and West Hempstead such wonderful places to live and work. The Herald believes in supporting local business.
For those Malverne readers used to getting the Village Herald, beginning this week that paper's name has been changed to the Lynbrook/East Rockaway Herald; and for West Hempstead subscribers to our former Franklin Square/Elmont/West Hempstead Herald, you'll be getting this new Malverne/West Hempstead Herald instead.
The changes have been made in response to readers' requests for more locally focused coverage. Now, with three Heralds instead of two serving the six communities of Malverne, West Hempstead, Franklin Square, Elmont, Lynbrook and East Rockaway, we'll have more room to provide sharper and deeper local news coverage, making each of the three newspapers even more locally driven and an even more important part of your community.
We haven't forgotten that some information -- certain school and issue-oriented news, for example -- has an impact on more than one community and is beyond the coverage area of any one of our papers. As we do whenever it's appropriate elsewhere in our 15-edition Herald Community Newspapers group, we will share news reports and stories among the three papers so that readers have enhanced access to all the information that affects their lives.
For those of you who aren't subscribers yet, please complete and return the new/renewal subscription form in this newspaper. There's no better way to stay current on all the news that affects you and your family most directly.
We hope you enjoy your new hometown newspaper and use it to keep up on everything that's happening in the place that matters most: right where you live. We also hope you write and tell us what we may have missed, and to let your neighbors know your thoughts on important local issues. We want this to be as much your paper as it is ours. Welcome.
