Welcoming Spring At Old Bethpage Village

Posted
Visitors of all ages can churn fresh cream into butter at the Powell Farmhouse play catch with an 1860's baseball or drill like a Civil War soldier. These are just some of what guests can discover about spring in the 1860s at the restored community. One of two big draws this weekend, is the Civil War Recruitment Rally, which takes place on Saturday, Apr. 17. Visitors are invited to the join the citizens of Old Bethpage Village as they rally to recruit soldiers into a new regiment to save the Union, in this authentic recreation of events that took place in 1862. Held at the Village's Noon Inn, this rally, or "War Meeting" as it was called in those days, re-enacts similar meetings that took place throughout the Town of Hempstead during that time. It is patterned after one particular session held on John Pettit's estate in Hempstead Village. The meeting consists of patriotic resolutions, inspirational speeches from town leaders and local clergy, and, of course, enlisting soldiers for the war effort. The recruitment rally and flag presentation is conducted at 2:30 p.m., when visitors are encouraged to join the new infantry company and even drill with the soldiers. A free drink is awarded to each person enlisting! The program includes infantry company drills at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., as well as immediately following the rally. The local Soldiers Aid Society is on hand support the troops through needlework projects and refreshments. Then, a final adieu is made, wishing the departing troops well as they depart for war.The event is hosted by Company H, 119th New York Volunteer Historical Association, an organization dedicated to the preservation of local Civil War history.April also means the start of another baseball season. Just like their counterparts throughout the region, Old Bethpage Village's Old Time Baseball league are ready for action. The Village's nationally recognized "boys of summer" take to the field for opening day, Sunday, Apr. 18, at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The two leagues, 1864 Rules and 1887 Rules, feature teams recreated from actual ball clubs that played on Long Island in the 1860s and 1880s. Visitors have an opportunity to experience base ball (it was two words back then) as it was played in the sports' infancy (on real grass). Games are played competitively, without a script, in actual contests. Players wear recreated period uniforms and use period equipment (that means no gloves since most fielders were barehanded back then). There are 10 teams in all, composed of players who are all volunteers, who play throughout the summer, culminating in a championship series in October. The season opener features the annual NY/NJ cup, a competition between two vintage baseball clubs from New Jersey and two from Old Bethpage Village.By the way, visitors can do more than watch the game. New players are welcome at any time during the season. Baseball lovers who don't want to play can participate as a costumed umpire. Old Bethpage Village offers special training and actual game experience with a seasoned umpire. Obtain more information by contacting the program coordinator, at (516) 572-8405.
