West Babylon softball gears up for big year

The West Babylon softball program entered the season with a clear sense of purpose and a roster that blends experienced leadership with an influx of young, developing talent.

Now in his third year at the helm, coach Joe Montanino has his sights set on a return to the playoffs, a goal that reflects both the team’s potential and the steady foundation being built.

After graduating key infielders at third base, shortstop, and second base, West Babylon faces the challenge of reshaping its defensive core. Those departures leave big shoes to fill and the responsibility now falls on a youthful group that’ll be asked to grow quickly at the varsity level.

While there may be early growing pains, the coaching staff is confident that consistent game experience will accelerate development and help the team find its rhythm as the season progresses. “The only way they’re going to grow is by getting out there and playing,” said Montanino.

Leading the way is a strong senior class anchored by center fielder Sarah Caltabiano, a five-year varsity player who brings both experience and production. Caltabiano tallied 16 hits last season, including four doubles, and is known for her defensive instincts and steady presence at the plate. Fellow senior Giovanna Miranda adds versatility, contributing in the outfield and at third base, while continuing to refine her game after recording eight RBIs a year ago.

At first base, senior Jill Goldberg stands out as one of the Eagles’ most important pieces. Entering her third varsity season, Goldberg combines a disciplined eye at the plate with consistent offensive output, highlighted by 11 RBIs last season. Off the field, senior Jennise Gomez transitions into a manager role after previously playing on varsity, continuing to provide leadership and support in a new capacity.

The junior class adds depth and flexibility across the roster. Catcher Maria Fiume, who can also play shortstop and the outfield, leads the team in batting average and serves as a key offensive catalyst.

Alijah anchors second base with strong hands and reliable contact hitting, while Lilly Johnson and Kayleigh Carlson provide options in the circle and across multiple positions. Brooke Lubeck, in her first varsity season, brings potential at first base and in the outfield as she continues to develop.

West Babylon’s future is particularly bright with a talented group of underclassmen. Freshman Autumn Romano offers exceptional versatility, capable of playing virtually any position, while Lauren Giudice steps into the starting shortstop role and leadoff spot, showcasing speed, athleticism, and the rare ability to switch hit.

Eighth-grader Adriana Criollo adds another dynamic element as a left handed hitter who can both slap and hit for power, while also contributing in the circle. Additional youth in Alannah Ahern and Scarlett Tymann further emphasizes the team’s multi positional depth.

Despite the youth movement, the philosophy remains constant.

“Everything we do is together,” Montanino said. “No one player is better than the team. We love the culture we’ve built here.”

The Eagles (2-2 overall) are back in action this Saturday at home versus Rocky Point at 10 a.m.
