The evening included recognition for Cantor Wood, a Havdalah service, the Ida and Harry Ehrlich Memorial Concert featuring Crossroads Ensemble, a band playing a fusion of Latin, Jewish, Ladino and jazz elements with vocalist Anath Benain, and a celebration reception.
Many speakers took turns singing Cantor Wood's praises, pointing out his dedication to others and his deep sense of community involvement, remarking on how he has lifted spirits during his long tenure with both song and deed. Proclamations and tributes from Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (D-Mineola), Senator Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre), Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi, County Legislator Joseph Scannell and Rockville Centre Mayor Gene Murray were mixed with those from congregants, family and friends.
"His task is to draw the songs from our souls," said Central Synagogue's Rabbi Marc Gruber, who for years has worked side-by-side with the cantor, praising him for his remarkable gift.
"Your voice has been your divine power," said Tamara Saletsky, a congregant of Central Synagogue, "we thank you for the dignity and grace of your religious services."
Richard Skolnick, one of the evening's organizers, said "the sanctuary will resonate with your accomplishments for years to come."
Jonathan Wood said his father will be missed, and offered loving wishes to his parents for continued success and happiness.
For his part, Cantor Wood said his time at Central Synagogue has "been a wonderful journey of self-discovery, fulfilling in a very real way, my musical and spiritual journey."
