The N95 is a type of respirator — a tight-fitting facemask — that is rated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as other federal agencies to filter out 95 percent of airborne particles and liquid.
The Food and Drug Administration does not recommend the average person use an N95 respirator to protect against the coronavirus because it offers little to no protection unless the wearer has been properly trained in its use. Instead, the FDA recommends frequent handwashing and social distancing to avoid the disease.
