This mature, fully leafed tree that narrowly missed a home on the corner of Stonehenge Road and DeMott Avenue during the Oct. 7 windstorm, was one of 24 trees that toppled in the village that day. With wind gusts in the area reaching up to 45 mph — tropical storm force — workers from the Department of Public Works had their hands full. Of the 24 trees that were felled, seven had to be cut down due to extensive damage. Hundreds of limbs came down as well.
Workers from the village Electric Department were also busy dealing with damage from the storm: 14 customers on Wallace Street lost power from 2:10 to 3 p.m.; eight customers on Harvard Avenue were in the dark from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m.; and there were two service repairs for individual outages between 12:40 and 2 p.m.
Village workers also removed six tree limbs from secondary and/or primary cables (with no outages involved), checked one tree with no electricity involved and made two telephone cables safe.
