Winthrop gets donation for cardiovascular program

The gift will subsidize Winthrop's Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program, which provides advanced training and clinical research opportunities for physicians pursuing a career in cardiovascular medicine.Medtronic, Inc., headquartered in Minneapolis and the world's leading medical technology company, donated money to Winthrop as an opportunity to further enhance the care of patients and allow for research that will lead to new improved technologies.With the donation, Winthrop's Interventional Cardiology program will have additional resources to explore the field and to research topics that may lead to improved care for patients.

NUMC sets diabetes club meetings



The Nassau University Medical Center will hold Diabetes Club meetings for the rest of 2003 in the reserved section of the cafeteria on the first floor. The dates of the meetings are July 24, Aug. 28, Sept. 25 and Dec. 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.


NUMC to host Conference



The Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow and CyraCom International, Inc. will hold a Medical Interpretation & Translation Conference on Sept. 26-27, designed to deliver an overall understanding of the medical interpreter's role.The two-day conference will offer role playing workshops on the importance of ethics and sight translation. The informative training modules discuss the challenges medical interpreters face, the importance of developing standards and effective modes of interpreting. Medical Interpreters, managers of interpretation and translation services and human and social services professionals are encouraged to attend.The registration fee is $200 before Sept. 12 and $250 after Sept. 12. Volunteer drivers needed at Mercy



Mercy Medical Center's Volunteer Office is currently seeking volunteer drivers of cars to pick up patients for treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering at Mercy Medical Center, cardiac rehabilitation, physical therapy and respiratory therapy. For further information, one may call (516) 705-1391.


NUMC Volunteers sought



Nassau University Medical Center and the March of Dimes are working side-by-side to raise funds for research for the causes of pre- maturity as well as to improve the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Volunteers are needed to serve as team captains and sell bean bag bears, candy and cutouts at the hospital. Participants are also welcomed to walk and raise funds. The event will be held on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the campus of Nassau University Medical Center, 2201 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow. Winthrop's Olympic Fun Fest



Winthrop-University Hospital's Cancer Center for Kids will hold its annual FUN-FEST on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year's "Celebrate American Olympic Fun-Fest," will once again be held at the Red Robin Country Day School and Camp, on 878 Jericho Turnpike in Westbury. The event is presented by Friends of the Cancer Center for kids to help raise money for the Cancer Center and to raise awareness of childhood cancer. The event is open to the public and will feature Olympic Pavilions with interactive sports for everyone to participate in. The Fun-Fest will provide lots of entertainment for kids of all ages, including carnival games, pony rides, a dunk tank, face painting, Funny Fotoes and live music by Planet Groove and much more. The entrance fee is $5 per person and children under three are admitted free. All proceeds from the event go to Winthrop's Cancer Center for Kids to help provide the Center with the most sophisticated technology and treatment available. Proceeds also go towards improving the quality of life of children receiving impatient and outpatient care with games, toys and other equipment.
