Mercy offers stroke screening


Mercy Medical Center will be offering Stroke Alert! - the American Stroke Association's (ASA) free stroke screening program. The screening will take place on Friday, May 20 in the Mercy League Lounge at the CHS Management Center from 8 a.m. to Noon. The program will include blood pressure screenings, a cholesterol screening, carotid artery assessment and dietary recommendations. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States with someone suffering a stroke every 45 seconds. Mercy's goal, along with the ASA, is to raise public awareness and promote education in the community. Registration is limited with a deadline of May 13. For further information call (516) 705-2722.

Cancer support group


Franklin Hospital's Cancer Support Group will meet on Monday, April 4 at 2 p.m. in the hospital's Greenberg Conference Room.The group meets regularly the first Monday of every month from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members, and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provide emotional support. Additional information about the monthly meetings, or those seeking assistance and information concerning cancer, are urged to contact Franklin's director of patient care services, Meg Wehrum, R.N., at (516) 256-6012.

"Look Good.... Feel Better" offered at Franklin


"Look Good... Feel Better," a free program to teach women how to cope with the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment, will be held at Franklin Hospital Medical Center on Monday, April 11, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Greenberg Conference Room. Professional cosmetologists will teach special techniques to minimize the effects of skin changes and hair loss, including application of makeup, use of turban and scarves to best advantage and appropriate choice and care of wigs. Complimentary cosmetic kits will be provided to teach participants how to use them at home. Look Good... Feel Better is offered in partnership with the American Cancer Society, National Cosmetology Association and The Cosmetic Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) Foundation. The program will be offered bi-monthly at Franklin. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Paul Liu, M.D., medical director at South Nassau Communities Hospital Cancer Center and chief of gynecological oncology, will address the Special Lecture Series on the topic of "Menopause and Hormone Replacement - What's All The Hype About," on Tuesday, April 12, at 7 p.m.

Timothy Chen, M.D., cardiologist, will address the Heart Club on the topic of "Hypertension and Irregular Heartbeats," on Tuesday, April 19, at 8 p.m.
