Woman killed on Grand Avenue

Police said Maryanne Jeger, 62, was hit by a light colored, compact sport utility vehicle at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 8.
Police said Jeger was attempting to cross the busy thoroughfare just outside the Post Office at 2260 Grand Ave., near the intersection of Sunrise Highway. She was walking east, when she was struck by the SUV traveling southbound.
After striking Jeger, the driver continued south on Grand Avenue, police said.
A Nassau County Police ambulance transported Jeger to Nassau University Medical Center where the staff physician pronounced her dead at 6:46 p.m., police officials said.
Homicide Detective John Lapine added that police are looking for the light colored SUV, which is believed to have damage to the front on the right side and to the right front of the passenger side. Some workers in the area said they were unable to see the driver and the license plate of the car because the incident happened very quickly. The manager of the Post Office, who would not give his name, said workers did not see the women get hit, but witnessed the police response.
One source said that police were interviewing a witness who did see the accident, but police officials would not confirm the information.
Jeger's family members could not be reached for a comment. At a number of community meetings, many Baldwin residents have told town and county officials that this particular stretch of Grand Avenue is dangerous, as people clamor to find a parking space, especially at the Post Office, which they say is not easily accessible along a busy road.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous. Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,000 for information that results in an arrest of the suspect of the crime.
