The Woodmere Bay Yacht Club Commodore Lance Smith of Rockville Centre honored United States Marine Corps 1st Lieutenant Ronald D. Winchester. His mother, Marianna Winchester, of Rockville Centre, received a bouquet of red, white and blue flowers to memorialize her deceased son. Ronald “unselfishly gave his life so that we may continue to enjoy the sweetness of freedom and liberty for ourselves and our children.” So eloquently put by Fleet Captain and former Commodore Fred Schenker of Harbor Isle. Lieutenant Winchester, an Annapolis Graduate, died in his second tour in Iraq on Sept. 3, 2004 at the age of 25. He had been already decorated with the Presidential Unit Citation, Meritorious Unit commendation, the Combat Action Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and the Purple Heart.
