Jose Acosta, 31, of Brooklyn, sustained severe head trauma when he fell from a forklift at 9:05 a.m. He was rushed to Nassau University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:14 a.m., police said.
"It was a terrible tragedy, and we are very sorry for the man's family," temple President Max Gilman said of the accident, which created a bloody scene at the back of the synagogue, near the parking lot.
Temple employees and police said that Acosta was working for Green Contracting of New York in Brooklyn. Calls from the Herald to the company went unanswered.
Gilman said he believed Acosta was employed there for 10 years, and described his coworkers as devastated by the incident.
"Our condolences go out to the family," Gilman said.
