Collection of the recyclable trash will not follow the same schedule that residents
are accustomed to, however.
Unlike the every-other-day schedule (excluding weekends) that the district
currently follows for regular collection, the pickup for recyclables, such as newspaper,
cardboard, mixed paper, glass, metal, aluminum, plastic containers and yard waste, will
take place every other Wednesday.
"This schedule was decided following negotiations with the Department of
Environment Conservation and it's best for our district to do this to cover our expenses,"
said Nat Swergold, general counsel for Sanitary District 1.
Sanitation officials are hoping to get the 18,000 new bins to residents by early
2009, giving them the opportunity to separate waste materials and recyclables on their
own, prior to collection. There are approximately 50,000 residents and various
commercial and institutional properties within the district.
Sanitary District 1, which serves Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Hewlett Bay Park, Hewlett
Harbor, Hewlett Neck, Inwood, Lawrence, Woodmere, Woodsburgh and portions of the
unincorporated areas of Lynbrook and Mill Brook, doesn't plan to change its pick-up
procedures once the recycling containers are distributed throughout area.
"It is important for people to know that they do not need to bring the recycling
bins to the curb," Swergold said. "We will continue to go in the backyards of homes, if
that's where they are kept, or at the side of the house. We want to continue our rear-
yard service that we have always done."
The district will be sending those who will be receiving these new bins
informational packets to allow them to further understand the new program as its
inception grows closer.
"We know there may be some bumps in the road in the beginning," Swergold
said. "But we hope that after a period of time residents will adjust and everything will
work out smoothly."
